Apple and Samsung's Decade-Long Patent Infringement Lawsuit Ends Up in Settlement

In a joint filing at the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Apple and Samsung agreed to drop and settle their remaining claims and counterclaims in the matter. However, the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Apple and Samsung have been fighting over the designs and functionality of their smartphones and tablets since 2011.

The string of lawsuits started back in 2011 after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs threatened to go "thermonuclear" on rivals that used the Android operating system.

In May, a USA jury awarded Apple US$539 million, after Samsung had previously paid Apple US$399 million to compensate for patent infringement - Samsung would need to make an additional payment to Apple of almost US$140 million if the verdict was upheld.

Samsung declined to comment other than to confirm the agreement.

In May, the jury in the trial to recalculate the amount of compensation Apple was owed ruled that Samsung should pay 539 million dollars.

As the settlement made headlines, Apple said in a statement, "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers".

The importance of the second supplier is potentially massive for Apple, as by having LG Display's expertise to call on in the production of OLED screens, and potentially ramp up massively if it sees fit, it would put the company in a great position to strike cheaper deals with Samsung for the tech and reduce the overall cost of each new iPhone, which it could then pass on to iPhone users. It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple.

While Apple scored a major public relations victory with an initial US$1 billion verdict in 2012, Samsung also obtained rulings in its favour and avoided an injunction that would have blocked it from selling phones in the U.S. market, Risch said.

That award was seen as a victory for Apple, which had argued in court that design was essential to the iPhone.

"We're grateful to the jury for their service and pleased they agree that Samsung should pay for copying our products".

The South Korean tech giant hasn't sold the phones in question in more than five years.
