Cristiano Ronaldo makes more history as Portugal beats Morocco

Portugal's forward Cristiano Ronaldo attends

Ronaldo, 33, followed his hat trick in last Friday's 3-3 draw with Spain by scoring his 85th career goal for Portugal in the Russian capital to overtake Puskas, who played for Hungary from 1945 to 1956 and for whom Federation Internationale de Football Association has named its Goal of the Year Award.

But it is another former Bayern Munich forward, Iran's Ali Daei, whom Ronaldo will need to overhaul as the all-time top scorer in the history of global football. Morocco dominated its opening match against Iran but lost 1-0 on an own-goal by forward Aziz Bouhaddouz in stoppage time.

Four minutes into the game, Portugal earned their first corner and Silva stepped up to take the shot.

Boutaib had the first half-chance of the match in the second minute, but Morocco's number 13 could only flick his header wide of Rui Patricio's post.

Morocco got the match underway in what turned out to be a crackerjack at the end. The 2016 European Champions served up arguably the best game of the group stages with their dramatic 3-3 draw with Spain and will be hoping that Cristiano Ronaldo can inspire them to victory against the north African side.

The captain also put through Goncalo Guedes before the break only for the forward to shoot directly at Monir El Kajoui.

Ronaldo had two more free kick chances, though each from less than 20m.

The much-talked about plan of a Portugal in possession, spreading the play and dictating the tempo, never materialised. Portugal look set to progress but may need to offer more than just Ronaldo to win the World Cup. A short pass to Joao Moutinho and he curled it in to the six-yard area as Ronaldo raced from behind to dive and hit a sublime header past the Moroccan keeper to send Portugal 1-0 ahead in the game.

The centre-back pairing of Jose Fonte and Pepe (who, once again, did himself no favours in terms of his reputation by throwing himself to the ground when Benatia tapped him on the shoulder late on) needs protection and they did not get it.
