Five-time champion Brazil held 1-1 by Switzerland in World Cup

World Cup 2018: Brazil vs Switzerland — live

Neymar and Brazil couldn't capitalize on their opportunities against Switzerland in Sunday's 1-1 draw in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but they did find their way into the record books with some help from the Swiss.

Switzerland had to beat Northern Ireland to qualify for the World Cup, winning narrowly 1-0.

With 20 minutes gone, Coutinho gathered a clearance 25 metres from goal and curled a marvellous shot in off the far post. Steven Zuber then headed in the equalizer in the 50th.

Defending champions Germany lost to Mexico on Sunday while Argentina were held by Iceland and Spain drew with Portugal, with only France of the fancied teams winning despite an under-par display against Australia.

"At this stage of a World Cup you have to take advantage of a goal and see that your opponents are taking risks and you need to have faster transitions". Whether you are a die-hard fan, or one that watches soccer every four years, this video has you covered.

Defender Thiago Silva, who plays his domestic football with Paris Saint-Germain, said the players were left a little confused as to what they could say to the referee.

Brazil looked comfortable after Philippe Coutinho's brilliant first-half opener, dominating play against a limited Swiss side that looked to frustrate them from the off. There was a lot of anxiety, too much pressure, and it translated into our way of playing.

"The team was looking to move the ball and to work our rivals, but this will serve as a lesson, we have to be a bit cooler and more precise".

Brazil and Switzerland share second place, having one point each.

Brazil wasted several chances to snatch a victor late in the game, and center-back Thiago Silva acknowledged the team could have been more clinical in attack.

"I was hit and it was aching, but [it's] nothing to worry", Neymar said after the match, quoted by the Sun.

"It's not up to me, there are three professionals working there", said Neymar, referring to the officials. "My expectation of course was to get a victory and so, of course, I'm not happy with the result".

"I'm very glad to score, but what was important was our effort to win, and what we did as a team is what counts", Coutinho said. I could hardly believe that it was not suggested to him that he do so.
