Frank Lampard backs England to win the World Cup after Panama victory

Raheem Sterling

England put Panama to the sword in their Group G clash on Sunday night, romping to a 6-1 victory on the back of a Harry Kane hat-trick at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

His finishing has been clinical: Kane has scored with all five of his shots on target in the tournament, and is one goal behind 1986 Golden Boot victor Lineker as the England player to score the most goals at a single World Cup.

A header from a corner by John Stones, a penalty from Kane and a handsome strike from the edge of the box by Jesse Lingard set them on their way.

Playing from the off with an ease and trickery that contrasted with the stressed-looking England flops of recent global tournaments, Gareth Southgate's team romped into a remarkable 5-0 lead at half-time.

Kane completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute and coach Gareth Southgate had the luxury of substituting his captain with tougher challenges ahead. If England-Belgium is a draw, then the side with fewest yellow cards wins the group.

It's easy to forget, considering today's elation, that prior to Stones' opening goal England were sloppy and the defence looked shaky. It was plain sailing from then on.

49' It's been a slow start to the second half, with Panama taking a more conservative approach to proceedings.

In Russia, England has been trying to cast aside the negativity of the past while remolding the image of the team on and off the field.

Furthermore, the Three Lions were credited with penalty calls as the Panama defenders were too eager from inside the box and it resulted in two penalty attempts that Kane took advantage of.

England player Jesse Lingard was among those revelling in England's victory today, tweeting a picture of his successful strike with a tornado emoji and the hashtag #JLingz.

If Panama need a game after the World Cup, O'Neill's got them covered!

"It would be nice for us to be talked about in a positive way and we've just got to keep our feet on the ground and keep working hard in training".

"To concede five goals in the first half, two penalties, two set-pieces, where England were very, very effective, well, what we did was try to avoid a bigger catastrophe".

John Stones got the ball rolling after just eight minutes, with the Manchester City left totally unmarked to head home from a corner.

Schmeichel also had particular praise for Stones' second goal - and England's fourth - which saw a well-worked free-kick end up in the net.

The rout was the first time England have scored more than four goals at a World Cup finals since winning the tournament in 1966.

This Group G game was over as a contest once Stones gave England that early lead as Panama's ill-discipline and lack of organisation was brutally exposed.

This must be England's key to success as the opposition have no idea who they will be up against! "So far, it's been going my way, so hopefully that continues". Maybe England is capable of playing deep in this tournament, and this time making more penalty kicks than Germany or Portugal or whatever other historical nemesis or upstart it faces.

Later Sunday, Colombia produced an impressive performance to salvage their World Cup and send Poland crashing out of the tournament with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Radamel Falcao, Yerry Mina and Juan Cuadrado. So England weren't THAT good yesterday!
