President Trump Signs Order To End Family Separations At Border

U.S. President Donald Trump, facing domestic and global backlash, signed an executive order Wednesday to end the administration's controversial practice of separating migrant children from parents crossing the U.S. border illegally.

Trump signed the executive order following widespread protests against the move of his administration to separate children from their parents who illegally enter the country. As for the reason why the president chose to reverse course on the policy - "The pressure is everywhere", one senior GOP aide tells O'Keefe. Federal agencies are working to set up a centralized family-reunification center in Port Isabel, Texas, the official said, and it isn't clear how numerous 500 children are still being detained with their families.

President Trump appeared to relent under the weight of vast backlash today, signing an executive order he claims will end the much-criticized practice of separating families at the border.

Pictures of dozens of children sleeping in fenced enclosures and audio of crying children sparked anger in the USA from groups ranging from clergy to influential business leaders, as well as condemnation from overseas, including Pope Francis.

Trump then accused rival Democrats of putting "illegal immigrants before they put American citizens".

"I was just walking over to the Oval Office and I said, you know, it doesn't feel right to have a picnic for Congress when we're working on doing something very important", Trump said in remarks at the White House.

At the meeting on Wednesday, Trump went around the room asking the members of Congress, all Republicans, for their thoughts, most of which lavished praise upon the president.

But he added that the policy "continues to be a zero tolerance ..." "I think everybody believes that".

"We need you, those children need you -and I am talking directly to my Republican colleagues- we need you to stand up to President Donald Trump", he said. Instinctively combative and fond of chaos, Trump usually digs in on controversial policies, rather than backing down. He acted as it became clear that House Republicans were unable to reach consensus on either of two immigration bills they were considering that included provisions to halt family separations. They were kept in separate facilities - described as cage-like - as their parents underwent legal process pending deportation back to their countries.

A spokesman for the Administration for Children and Families told The New York Times that the children are not expected to be reunited with their parents. "His new executive order criminalizes asylum-seekers and seeks to indefinitely detain their children". "Children do not belong in jail". "Instead of protecting traumatised children, the President has directed his Attorney General to pave the way for the long-term incarceration of families in prison-like conditions", said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Expanded facilities could be key, as migrant children separated from their parents are now housed by a different department, Health and Human Services.

The Trump administration separated more than 2,000 children from their parents since early May, garnering overwhelming backlash from the public.

The executive order states that immigrant families will be detained together, except in cases where there are concerns about the child's welfare, but it is unclear for how long.

"So we will be officially postponing the congressional picnic for tomorrow". The order is fewer than 800 words, but it does little to resolve the chaos generated by the family separation policy.

"Some of the members wanted to make sure the president is very visible in his support for both bills", said Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, which makes up more than half the GOP majority.

Trump is again placing blame on Democrats, asserting that "they won't give us the votes needed to pass good immigration legislation".
