The seven recent supreme court rulings that will reshape America

US Supreme Court Upholds Trump's Travel Ban

Colbert called the retirement of Justice Kennedy a "seismic political event" since he was the deciding vote in many SCOTUS rulings and the vacant seat gives President Donald Trump the opportunity to nominate a second conservative judge.

Senators react to Supreme Court travel ban ruling.

If Republicans unite behind Trump's selection, there's little that Democrats can do to stop it. Republicans changed the Senate rules previous year so that Supreme Court nominees cannot be filibustered, meaning only 51 votes will be required to confirm. If Trump is able to successfully confirm a conservative judge, it appears as if the court will shift against the liberal wing. "This is less than a quarter of the volume needed to be on track for 2016 student visa levels", the last full year before the ban took effect, Justice Stephen Breyer noted in his dissenting opinion.

That list included two judges with Michigan connections: Judge Raymond Kethledge, on the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, and then-Michigan Supreme Court Justice Joan Larsen, who a year ago was confirmed by the U.S. Senate to join Kethledge on the Sixth Circuit. "The Court has rightly upheld this common-sense, longstanding practice, which I hope will end once and for all the tortured reasoning of liberal judges who make up new legal doctrines because they personally disapprove of the president".

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on "Fox & Friends" on Thursday to react to the impending retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Thapar, 49, was handpicked by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to serve as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. "You saw this with Neil Gorsuch".

Sen. Cory Booker (D., N.J.) said of the targeted countries: "If it really was about our safety, it would be a different list".

McConnell refused to consider Garland because it was a presidential election year.

A decisively conservative bench would embolden the GOP to encourage more of those kinds of cases to the highest court with a certainty of victory.

Leonard Leo, an outside advisor to Trump on judicial nominations who is on leave from his post at the Federalist Society, said Trump's list of potential nominees for this vacancy includes numerous very best judges in America. He has voted to prohibit the execution of the mentally disabled and to prohibit the range of crimes eligible for both the death penalty and life without parole, and has been more open than his conservative colleagues to allowing federal habeas review on such issues and on other issues affecting criminal justice.

In recent Trump cabinet nomination votes, the Senate's Democratic moderates have seemed willing to go along with the president's choices, perhaps giving some indication as to how they might approach Trump's Supreme Court nominee.

The Constitution is actually pretty vague about the Senate's role in approving Supreme Court nominees.

"I don't think the word "devastated" is too strong of a word upon hearing this news".

"Let the American people have a say when women's health and equal rights are on the line", she added.
