World Cup Group D match report Iceland v Croatia 26 June 2018

Croatia's players celebrate their victory at the end of their Russia 2018 World Cup Group D match against Argentina at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod

Croatia had their first clear chance when Milan Badelj's missile crashed onto the bar six minutes into the second half. Croatia are already through to the last 16 after wins against Nigeria and Argentina.

Iceland face Group D leaders Croatia needing a win to stand a chance of progressing to the second round, although they will also depend on the result of Nigeria's game against Argentina.

Bjarnason went closer when Lovre Kalinic flapped at a corner but somehow recovered to block his shot as the pressure mounted but Croatia held out.

Iceland equalised with a penalty shot taken by Gylfi Sigurdsson in the 76th minute after substitute Dejan Lovren carelessly handled the ball.

Croatia's possession lacked a cutting edge but, with a draw enough to top the group, they had little incentive, especially as Iceland looked toothless until news of Lionel Messi's opening goal reached them. Gylfi Sigurdsson levelled with a penalty but Ivan Perisic grabbed a last-gasp victor.

Iceland challenged almost immediately, with a first headers by Ingason tipped over the crossbar by Kalinic and a second glancing off of it.

Croatia improved from a display which had failed to register a convincing effort in the first half, with Badelj striking the bar before going one better a minute later, half-volleying into the ground and beyond Halldorsson from eight yards.

Iceland pushed forward, and threw men forward in search of a victor which looked increasingly like it would send them through. Get live updates of Croatia vs Iceland FIFA World Cup 2018 Group D match here.

Hallgrimsson cut his teeth in global management as assistant to Swede Lars Lagerback, who steered Iceland to the Euro 2016 finals, where they beat England in the last 16 but fell to host nation France at the quarter-final stage.

Ivan Perisic has scored three World Cup goals for Croatia - only Davor Suker (6) has scored more.

Iceland will have to copy their game plan that worked in their win over Croatia. Iceland's maiden World Cup campaign, meanwhile, has ended with a first-round departure.
