Farmers Want Better Trade Deals, Not A Bailout

'Making America 1929 Again': GOP Sen. Sasse Rips Trump on Tariffs, Planned Farmer 'Bailout'

Farmers in the U.S. have been adversely impacted after the Trump administration imposed tariffs on aluminium and steel imports, triggering a trade war with several countries including China, which has announced retaliatory measures against American goods.

President Trump looked to soothe fears from jittery Republicans over his trade policy Wednesday, saying that negotiations are going well and urging people to "be cool" ahead of his talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

The assistance will be a mix of direct payments to farmers, commodity purchases for food-aid programs, and stepped up promotion of new US export markets, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said told reporters on Tuesday. "Either a country which has treated the United States unfairly on Trade negotiates a fair deal, or it gets hit with Tariffs", Trump tweeted.

They will now get help from the Commodity Credit Corporation, a federal program that helps American farmers by buying their crops.

The tweet came on the same day that Trump issued this one, amid news that his administration was starting a $12 billion plan to help US farmers amid trade disputes.

The money comes after farmers, especially soybean growers, have felt the brunt of retaliatory tariffs placed on agriculture by China and other nations that the Trump administration has penalized with tariffs on imports.

The aid "will provide a welcome measure of temporary relief to our farmers and ranchers", said Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, the largest American farmer group.

Nationals Farmers Union President Roger Johnson calls the Trump administration's plan to cut checks to farmers impacted by the trade war "a short-term fix to a long-term problem". "This administration's tariffs and bailouts aren't going to make America great again, they're just going to make it 1929 again", he said.

The European Union has said it is prepared to discuss lowering tariffs "in all sectors" if the United States drops its punitive levies on aluminium and steel, ahead of a crunch meeting today.

He wasn't the only member of Trump's party to vent after the administration pledged to provide up to $12 billion in aid for US farmers to shield them from the effects of trade disputes cultivated by the White House itself. Soybean prices were already falling, dropping 19 percent since early May to a 10-year low and corn is down more than 15 percent.

It said trading nations like New Zealand work best when everyone agrees on the rules of worldwide commerce, and uncertainty caused by trading disputes is the last thing farmers need. Beijing's retaliatory tariffs have hit American soybeans and pork.

Automakers and White House officials privately believe Trump is intent on imposing tariffs of up to 25 percent on imported cars and parts despite the nearly unanimous opposition of the auto industry and deep concern among members of Congress.

Pennsylvania farmers greeted the Trump Administration's announcement Tuesday of $12 billion in emergency aid to agriculture with mixed emotions. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., told the New York Times.

In a speech on July 24, Trump told supporters that his predecessors are to blame for the existing deals, which he called a "disaster".

"That's pretty big when you consider that 85 percent of our fruits and vegetables go to the NAFTA countries", Rotz said.

"There will never be enough money to solve the problem" created by Chinese duties on USA farm goods, said Senator Jerry Moran of Kansas, a Republican.

German producers and supplies employ more than 118,000 people at about 300 plants and manufacture more than 800,000 vehicles per year in the USA - with more than half of the cars being exported, according to figures provided by the German automotive industry.

"The administration must develop a support mechanism that will mitigate the significant damage that is being inflicted upon our most vital worldwide markets for years to come", he said in a statement.

"The European Union is coming to Washington tomorrow to negotiate a deal on Trade".

"Tariffs are taxes that punish American consumers and producers", Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul wrote on Twitter.
