Molinari wins in record runaway at final Quicken Loans National

Tiger Woods plays from the rough on the 18th hole during the third round of The National golf tournament at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

Sweet-swinging Francesco Molinari clinched his first PGA Tour title in style, an emphatic eight-shot romp at the Quicken Loans National in Maryland on Sunday as Tiger Woods finished equal fourth.

The world No 17 produced a world-class display and played a five-hole stretch in six under on his way to a bogey-free 62 at TPC Potomac, ending the week on a tournament record-low of 21 under and becoming the first Italian victor on the PGA Tour since 1947.

The final round of the 2018 Quicken Loans National will play itself out on Sunday at TPC Potomac, and to say that all eyes will be on Tiger Woods might be an understatement.

Italy's Francesco Molinari and American Billy Horschel were on 132 with Zac Blair on 133 and a pack on 134 including Taiwan's C.T. Pan, Australian Marc Leishman and American Kevin Streelman, who shot a course-record 62.

It was also an encouraging week for Tiger Woods as he continues to improve since his return to the circuit, the American shooting 66 to finish 10 shots behind the victor in a tie for fourth on his last start before the British Open.

Beginning the day four shots back, Woods bogeyed the opening hole before electrifying the crowd with four straight birdies at the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh holes to get within one shot of the lead. The bad news: Woods was last in the field in putting from inside 10 feet, making 60 of 73. "When I was struggling there for a little bit, and I couldn't even cheer for my good ones".

The world number 17 is ranked 186 spots higher than Ancer, who has only one top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this year.

That victory was a lot like this one - a master performance by a player who relies on his tee-to-green game and thrives when the putter is hot.

"I don't know if the course is going to be set-up like that but you just never know as it's been warm over there, and the grass has probably been growing".

"Amazing. I played great today", Molinari said.

Woods answered by sinking a five-foot birdie putt at 16, but stumbled again at the finish.

"It's a tweener between my training putter at home and what I normally go with, so just go ahead and trust", Woods said.

"It turned everything around making that par at three", Woods said. The Ohio State alum squared four bogeys (one 3-putt) against six circles and was 1-over thru 12 holes, before playing his final six in blemish-free 3-under.

So Woods didn't outright say it, but that final comment appears to be a pretty likely jab at the U.S. Golf Association.

When co-leader Ancer opened with a bogey, finding sand with his first two shots, Molinari took the lead for good. After hitting his tee shot through the green at the par-4 14th, Woods botched the chip and then missed a 7-footer.
