Nadal Sets Up Wimbledon Semi-Final Clash With Djokovic

Nadal beats Del Potro in five-set thriller

The Spanish second seed will play 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

But first they have to negotiate their quarter-final matches on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was 2-1 down after three sets but he was able to overcome a spirited performance from Del Potro with both players leaving everything on the court.

Here, with the help of two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, BBC Sport looks at how the last eight men standing match up...

John Isner is having the best year of his career after winning the Miami Open in March and he has now posted his best run in a grand slam.

"Of course I was anxious when I lost the second set", said the Spaniard.

He said: "I just asked the chair umpire how did I deserve that warning?"

"I hope I get off to a good start, go from there".

Anderson, 32, is one of the biggest servers on tour and the hot conditions are helping his game. "I hope I can get a chance to fight for a trophy".

"It would take an unbelievable serving performance from Anderson".

A bad day for...

...

Isner has a higher percentage of landed first serves than anyone else, while only Federer has won more points on his first serve than Raonic.

"For the rest of the things, great news, semi-finals of Wimbledon again". "I feel [that] if I have to compare the game that I've played, the level of tennis that I've had those years and today, I think it's pretty close", Djokovic explained to the ATP official website. I don't want to stop here. The 12-time Grand Slam champion then raised his level in the fourth set and finished with a victor into the corner to book his place in the semi-finals on Friday.

There was, however, one consolation for Del Potro who came off second best despite belting down 33 aces and producing 77 staggering winners, 10 more than Nadal.

Former world number four Nishikori, who has never faced Djokovic on grass, has lost twice to him this year on clay. "But Rafa came to me and we shared a big hug, and it was kind of him". "It's always a big challenge".

"I think I did a lot of things well. He's got a great shot".

It was such a great effort from Del Potro. Del Potro trailed 1-3 but at 5-5 he fired down a swinging ace to reach match point number five and this time Simon cracked, netting a backhand to the relief of the Argetine who roared his approval.

The final set lasted 90 minutes, and it was captivating.

The fifth seed lost to Nadal in the Paris semi-finals last month, however.

Great match, an emotional match for both of us and for the fans, too. "I tried to resist and maintain focus". I went to the net.

Del Potro kept Nadal on the baseline with a powerful return.

Given the fact he withdrew from a pre-Wimbledon event with a groin concern and called the trainer during his match with Simon, Del Potro's fitness could be a factor.

Juan Martin del Potro has earned himself a chance to set the record straight against Rafael Nadal after finally sealing a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

"Rafa is a fighter", del Potro said. Williams responded by raising the intensity level and began striking the ball with ferocious power to break Giorgi's serve for the first time on her way to levelling the match.
