Protesters clash with police after man shot by officer in Chicago

Protesters sparred with Chicago police officers following a deadly shooting on Saturday

By 7:30 pm, protesters had gathered at the scene of the fatal shooting on 71st St and faced-off with authorities who used their batons to push back the furious crowds.

The incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue, according to the Chicago Police Department.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, Guglielmi said, but he did not say whether the man was armed when he was shot at around 5:30 p.m. local time, Fox 32 Chicago reported.

People outside the crime scene after the shooting claimed a female officer shot the man, a neighborhood barber, at least five times in the back as he ran away, and that the officer was taken away from the scene in a police vehicle afterward as the crowd formed. Waller said protesters threw bottles and jumped on top of a squad auto. Guglielmi said the shooting was captured on the officer's body camera. Protesters threw rocks and bottles at officers and four were arrested as cops struck people with batons and dragged them to the ground.

Saturday's shooting and subsequent civil unrest come days after a Chicago police officer was filmed telling two young men, "I kill motherf**kers" and threatening to arrest them for walking in the street.

The city erupted in protest in 2015 after the release of a video showing white police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting black 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. Police also said they found a gun after searching the area.

The report prompted a series of reforms, including the use of body cameras, created to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable. "Several arrests were made", Waller said.

These disparities, particularly the killing of African Americans by police, has prompted the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, a popular civil rights movement aimed at ending police violence and dismantling structural racism.
