Tour de France organisers ban Brit Froome

Tour de France's director Christian Prudhomme looks on prior to the start the 178 km twelfth stage of the 103rd edition of the Tour de France

From the outset, Tour de France organizer, Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), have argued their priority to is protect the integrity of the world's best-known cycling race, saying they do not want another victor with an asterisk next to his name on their honors list.

The decision is meant to protect the image of the race because the British rider is at the centre of an ongoing doping case.

Five-time Tour victor Bernard Hinault called for the peloton to strike if the British rider lines up at this year's event, while Froome responded on Wednesday that he will compete in this year's race.

The news that they were excluding Froome was leaked by French daily Le Monde on Sunday, and confirmed to AFP by sources close to the organizers.

UCI president David Lappartient reacted to the story on the sidelines of the French national championships. We didn't know anything, as always, even if it's hard to believe.

But the rider, who completed his hat-trick of Grand Tours after winning the Giro D'Italia this year, has been embroiled in controversy after he failed a drugs test while winning the 2017 Vuelta a España.

Team Sky have yet to unveil their eight-strong team.

A win this year would make Froome the second racer after Merckx to win four straight Tours.

Froome, who says he has suffered from asthma since the age of 18, had double the permitted 1,000 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) in his system when tested at last year's Vuelta a Espana.

But Le Monde commented that "the Tour de France wants to avoid at all costs finding itself in the same situation as at the recent Tour of Italy where Froome's final win is now marked with an asterisk".

The 2018 Tour de France ends July 29 after 3,329 kilometres of riding. He has faced criticism from some fellow and former riders, suggesting he should step aside from competing while the case remains unresolved.
