Brett Kavanaugh Hits Hurdle On Road To Supreme Court

Brett Kavanaugh is sworn in as a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by Supreme Cour

Any delay could mean that Kavanaugh, if ultimately approved by the Republican-led Senate, could still miss the October 1 start of the Supreme Court's term and that the final confirmation vote could take place close to the November 6 USA congressional elections.

Many Democratic senators have refused to meet with Judge Kavanaugh until nearly a million pages of documents related to his time working for the Bush administration are released.

"I want to really complement the Democrats who have stood up and are willing to stand up for Judge Kavanaugh because they realize we can't keep going down this partisan, picky, stupid, dumbass road that has happened around here for so long", he said. Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) have been negotiating for weeks about what documents would be requested but ultimately did not reach a consensus. Chairman Chuck Grassley had asked for Kavanaugh's emails and paper filings from his time as Bush's associate White House counsel, and more documents pertaining to his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

"For this Supreme Court nominee, it's probably the deepest dive we've had into the background of a Supreme Court justice, at least from the quantity of material available", Grassley told reporters Thursday.

Republicans are calling Democrats' request for more documents a delay tactic, but the letter from the National Archives shows that Kavanaugh's confirmation may be delayed even without Democratic action. "What more do they need to know to vote no?"

"Getting the documents is especially important", said Sen.

"I have told my caucus that I'm waiting, and I think majority are following me", Schumer told The New York Times last month.

Hoeven's office said he'll meet with Kavanaugh Wednesday afternoon.

Particularly concerning to Democrats are Kavanaugh's writings on the special counsel law after his experience on Kenneth Starr's team investigating President Bill Clinton. "(Patrick) Leahy as historic", continued Tillis.

Manchin said afterward it was a "productive" meeting but added he would like to meet with Kavanaugh again after his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee and ahead of the full Senate debate on the nominee, the Hill reported.

"If you were to stack up all these pages, it'd be taller than Big Ben, taller than the Statue of Liberty, taller than the US Capitol", Tillis pointed out.

"I'm exhausted of partisanship and frankly, we didn't treat their candidates for these positions the way they're treating ours", Sen.

The term Bork - recognized in the Oxford American Dictionary since 2002 - refers to what Hatch called the "unprecedented campaign of character assassination" waged against Judge Robert Bork during his 1987 Supreme Court confirmation hearing.
