Israel launches scores of airstrikes as Gaza fire persists

Swedish activists sent home after being arrested by Israel

"The Hamas terrorist organization continues to carry out acts of terror against Israeli citizens and the defense infrastructures that protect them, violates Israeli sovereignty and endangers the citizens of Israel and the security forces", the IDF statement read.

The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's armed wing, claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, which came after two of its fighters were killed Tuesday by Israeli strikes inside Gaza.

The majority of some 70 rockets hit open areas while 11 were intercepted, Israel's military said.

Israel's rescue service Magen David Adom said three Israelis, including two men aged 34 and 20 were taken to hospital for treatment.

A top Hamas official said the group waited for the delegation to leave Gaza before responding with rocket fire late on Wednesday.

After a few hours of relative quiet, Israeli forces targeted western Gaza City on Thursday evening, the Gaza health ministry reported, adding that at least seven Palestinians were injured.

A senior IDF officer told Army Radio on Thursday morning that he saw a new full-scale war with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip as inevitable.

The headline that read: "Israeli airstrikes kill a woman and a baby", reported the continuous Israeli airstrikes on Gaza during Wednesday night in which a pregnant woman was killed with her one year old daughter.

Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations' humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, in a news release called Israel's restriction of fuel imports "a unsafe practice, with grave consequences on the rights of people in Gaza".

Yoav Galant, Israeli cabinet minister for construction and housing, said that "whatever is needed to be done to defend our civilians and soldiers will be done, no matter what would be the price in Gaza".

The exchange of fire came amid attempts by Egypt and the United Nations to broker a five-year ceasefire between Israel and the militant group Hamas, Turkey's Anadolu news agency reported.

According to eyewitnesses, at least 12 successive explosions were heard as Israeli warplanes flew over Gaza City, hitting a popular cultural centre.

Hamas continued firing rockets during the night.

Israel's defense chief said last month that Gaza's only commercial border crossing, Keren Shalom, would reopen if calm persisted.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) released the first images of the coastal defense barrier that it is constructing in the sea on the country's maritime border with the Gaza Strip on 5 August.

Israeli media said officials were considering evacuating residents from areas near the Gaza border. According to reports, it would be the relative of a senior Hamas commander.

Hamas warned Israel - with which it has fought three wars since 2008 - it would pay for the attack. "If the current escalation however is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".
