Keralites thank UAE leaders for their assistance during floods

Kerala rains,Kerala floods,Epidemic outbreak

# 02:42 PM: 373 dead in Kerala since May 30 due to rains, floods, landslides.

The Chief Minister, reacting immediately to a request from Kerala officials, discussed the details for sending rice with Finance and Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender, Chief Secretary SK Joshi and Civil Supplies Commission Akun Sabharwal and instructed that 500 tonnes of rice be sent immediately to Kerala.

Thousands of people in flood-ravaged south India waded August 20 through muck and mud to begin the vast task of cleaning their homes and businesses.

Earlier, the UAE government had announced that it had set up a national emergency committee to oversee rescue work done in Kerala, The Times of India reported.

Millions of dollars in donations have poured into Kerala from the rest of India and overseas in recent days.

This is not fair, and these elements must show a sense of responsibility and care for the flood-afflicted and should not chase them to the relief camps, Vijayan said.

He did, however, appeal to neighboring state of Tamil Nadu to draw more water from the reservoir behind the dam, which has risen to its maximum safe level of 142 ft. Commercial flight operations from the naval airport at Kochi commenced today with the first Air India flight from Bengaluru arriving on Monday morning.

Pinarayi Vijayan said that on August 17, over 82,000 people had been rescued and on Monday, this had come down to just over 600. The deadliest deluge in close to a century has claimed 210 lives since August 8 and almost 400 since May 29 when the south west monsoon set in over Kerala. Incessant downpours since August 8 have killed more than 190 people and left thousands more stranded.

At least 1,000 were feared stranded in five villages around Chengannur, one of the districts worst hit by the deluge.

Officials say it is the worst flooding in Kerala in a century, with rainfall in some areas well over double that of a typical monsoon season.

The state faces a very large task of rehabilitating over 7 lakh people who were displaced by the floods that killed more than 400 people.

Over 7.24 lakh displaced people have been sheltered in 5,645 relief camps dotting the state, they said.

The Indian Navy deployed 112 rescue teams, 2 Medical Teams and 104 boats, and the Indian Coast Guard sent 42 Disaster Response Team with 74 boats.

Though most of those marooned have been evacuated, the state government and defence forces said rescue efforts will continue till the last person was brought to safety. People have started returning home from relief centres with flood waters receding. Many were shocked to see the state of their homes covered with mud and slush as the water receded.
