North, South Korean leaders to meet in Pyongyang in September

South & North Korea to hold summit in Pyongyang in September

The North Korean leader met the South's President Moon in April and May at the border truce village of Panmunjom, within the demilitarised zone (DMZ) that separates the two Koreas, and agreed that the next summit in autumn would be held in the North Korean capital.

Players from South Korea (R) and North Korea (L) pose for a photo session before the inter-Korean workers' football match in Seoul on August 11, 2018.

The announcement released after almost two hours of talks led by the rivals' chiefs for inter-Korean affairs was remarkably thin on details.

He added that continuing the discussions on the two leaders' summit in Pyongyang will help improve the inter-Korean ties.

The rival Koreas have agreed to hold a third summit between their leaders in Pyongyang sometime before the end of September.

Cho said the two sides had exchanged views on the North's denuclearisation and on a peace mechanism to replace the armistice that ended fighting during the Korean War.

It was not clear why Mr Ri and Mr Cho differed on the issue of the date, and Mr Cho would not answer a specific question about the discrepancy.

Leaders from North and South Korea announced a scheduled third summit Monday, with both governments agreeing to meet in September to discuss the denuclearization of the peninsula and a potential end of their decades long conflict.

But despite the rapprochement, global sanctions against the North for its nuclear and missile programs have kept economic cooperation between the two Koreas from taking off, while little progress has been made on the key issue of Pyongyang's denuclearization.

Pyongyang has urged Washington to ease the economic punishments, but the United States says that can not happen until the North completely denuclearises.

By contrast, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seemed to come away empty-handed from a trip to Pyongyang following the June Singapore summit between President Trump and Kim, with North Korea blaming his "gangster-like mind-set".

Meanwhile the United States has urged the global community to maintain tough sanctions on the isolated regime - Seoul has caught three South Korean firms importing coal and iron from the North previous year in violation of the measures.

Experts say there has been slow progress on those efforts since the Singapore summit.

Pyongyang urged Washington to reciprocate its goodwill gestures, which include suspending missile and nuclear tests and returning the remains of Americans who fought in the Korean War.
