Police Brace for 'Unite the Right' Sequel, Trying to Expect the Unexpected

State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary

After last year's event in Charlottesville, Virginia, ended up in violence that resulted in the death of one counter-protester, the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington is working with restaurants to help them know how to respond legally to situations, reports The Washingtonian.

This time, supporters plan to gather in a much more high-profile setting: Lafayette Square park, directly across the street from the White House.

In addition to Kessler, also planning to attend the white-supremacist rally, according to documents obtained by Washington City Paper from the National Park Service, are David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard, and several neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers. States of emergency have already been declared for both Charlottesville and the Commonwealth of Virginia ahead of this weekend's rally, about 115 miles away in the nation's capital.

The National Park Service said Wednesday it issued a permit for a rally in Lafayette Park by Unite the Right.

"Law enforcement's goal during the entire operational period will be to keep the two groups separated", said Metropolitan Police Department chief Peter Newsham.

After last year's protests, debates erupted on whether or not Confederate monuments should be removed.

Jason Kessler has vowed to press ahead with plans for an August 12 rally in Washington, D.C., after Charlottesville denied him a permit.

Last year's Unite the Right rally ended with violent clashes between marchers and counter-protesters.

"People are welcome into the community, people are invited into the community", she said.

Officials in Charlottesville have vowed a massive police presence - with some 1,000 personnel assigned - to deter any violence.

Law enforcement and D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser stood shoulder-to-shoulder Thursday touting lessons learned from previous year and patrolling other controversial demonstrations.

Rally supporters and counter-protesters screamed, shouted, chanted, threw punches, hurled water bottles, and unleashed chemical sprays on each other that weekend in Charlottesville.

The clashes turned deadly when a vehicle ploughed into a group of counter demonstrators, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence.

"D.C. police deal with protests every week and more or less have unlimited resources".

More details about the demonstrations are expected to be released in the coming days.

Since Charlottesville and her widely viewed documentary on what occurred there, Reeve has also been approached by neo-Nazis in unexpected places - including, she says, airport security.

Newsham said authorities are "intimately aware that the views being expressed on Sunday can strike to the core of a person's values. We hope the anniversary of those events passes peacefully".

In response to questions regarding what intelligence has been gathered about any demonstrators or groups planning to show up this weekend, public officials have said that such information can not be publicly revealed.

The images of people carrying torches and shouting racist slogans as they marched shocked the city, the country and the world.
