Cops search home of couple who raised funds for homeless man

The Saga Of The Couple Who Swindled A Homeless Man Out Of $400,000 Raised For Him On GoFundMe - Digg

"Further updates will be provided as circumstances warrant". They launched the online plea for Bobbitt, a 35-year-old North Carolina native living under an I-95 ramp, who spent his last $20 to help McClure when she ran out of gas in Kensington late one-night last fall.

Bobbitt's attorney, however, said the veteran had only seen $75,000 of the total $402,706 raised by 14,347 people.

"Johnny sits on the side of the road every day, holding a sign", McClure wrote on the page, which was created on November 10, 2017.

But there are exemptions in this policy and requirements that donors must meet to get paid back. "A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can".

NBC reports that a spokesperson for GoFundMe stated that Bobbitt will get his entire $400,000 even if his attorneys can not recover it all from a couple accused of taking the donation money and spending it on lavish vacations and other items.

For the time being, the money will be transferred to an account controlled by Bobbitt's lawyers, but it can not be used until the judge determines who will manage it.

"I always felt like I was in a weird situation", Bobbitt told ABC. "I hate that it came to this".

The rest of the money will be handed over after GoFundMe conducts an investigation relying on items seized by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office and what his attorneys turn over to them, Fallon says.

It's unclear how much money they had left from the GoFundMe campaign, which promised to use the funds to buy Bobbitt a home and his dream auto, a 1999 Ford Ranger.

In purported text messages between D'Amico and Bobbitt before the lawsuit and investigation, D'Amico seems to contradict his and his girlfriend's claim that they did not want to give a drug addict control of so much money. "I wanted to make sure that at the end of the day, when he was ready to, he had something left".

But Bobbit has filed a lawsuit against the couple, alleging that they engaged in fraud and had misspent the funds. McClure is a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and D'Amico is a carpenter, according to the Inquirer. They have denied the allegations. McClure and D'Amico have been ordered to appear in court next week to explain what happened to the money, but no charges have been filed.

Bobbitt's legal team has asked Judge Paula Dow to force the couple to stay in New Jersey, give up their passports and not spend any money from their bank accounts, the Inquirer reported.

During an appearance on NBC's "Megyn Kelly Today" show, D'Amico told Kelly there was well over $150,000 left of the donations. They took to GoFundMe, raising $400,000 from strangers touched by the man's story, and pledged to put the money into a trust for the man.

This photo taken August 15, 2018, shows Johnny Bobbitt Jr., a homeless man who used his last $20 to fill up the gas tank of a stranded motorist in Philadelphia. The trusts were never established, D'Amico said. "They're New Jerseyans. They have been here forever".

Dow ordered Bobbitt to give a sworn deposition next week. At the request of Bobbitt's attorney, the judge has shut the suit down until at least December.

Mr Bobbitt, whose lawyer said he is entering a drug addiction program, will also be deposed.
