Elon Musk and SpaceX unveils the first private passenger to the Moon

SpaceX gets first private passenger for moon trip

SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced Yusaku Maezawa of Japan will be the first "private passenger" on a moon mission using the promised BFR rocket.

The company said the flight on board the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) - a launch system that was unveiled by Mr Musk in 2016 - represented "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of travelling to space".

The 42-year-old entrepreneur says he wants his guests to be inspired to create once they return to Earth. Musk has said previously he hoped the rocket would be ready for a trip to Mars by 2022.

SpaceX also tweeted a render of the BFR on a trip around the Moon last Thursday, Sept. 13. He once dropped over $110 million (£84 million, AU$154 million) on a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat in 2017.

Between six and eight artists will join the expedition called Dear Moon, which is now planned for 2023.

"I love art and I look forward to seeing what different artists working together [can] bring to life", Maezawa added.

Musk described Maezawa as incredibly fearless and said his desire to participate in and pay for this trip restored Musk's faith in humanity.

Musk further said that this mission isn't a walk in the park and is unsafe.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was reluctant to disclose the amount of money Maezawa paid to be a part of the mission, simply saying: "He's paying a very significant amount of money". The moon's orbit is, on average, 238,855 miles (384,400 km) away.

Maezawa will be the first person to go to the moon since the U.S. Apollo missions ended in 1972. Twenty-four men flew to the moon from 1968 through 1972, and half of them made it to the lunar surface.

If all goes according to plan, Maezawa and his artist crew could become the first-ever private lunar tourists in history. The space agency aims to build a gateway in the vicinity of the moon, complete with staff, during the 2020s.

Of course, the trip will be all expenses paid for the artists.

The week-long Moon mission is scheduled for 2023, with tests kicking off within the "two to three years", the newspaper reports.

Maezawa, who is well known as an art collector, is calling the flight the "Dear Moon project".

Mr Musk did not name the clients a year ago or say how much they would pay. "They will be asked to create something after they return to Earth".

Two high-level executives announced departures from Tesla, and the diver sued Musk on Monday.

"I think it is really healthy to see this iterative change happening, because I believe we can assume it is based on actual development and simulation going on", Greg Autry, the director of the Southern California Spaceflight Initiative, told Business Insider in an email ahead Musk's announcement.

Earlier in the day, Musk was sued for defamation by the British driver he had accused of being a "child rapist" and pedophile via tweets and emails to media.
