Serena Williams' list of US Open implosions

Serena Williams hits a return to Anastasija Sevastova during their women's singles semifinal

Williams was given a third penalty for calling Ramos a "thief".

A few minutes after Naomi Osaka won the 2018 U.S. Open, ESPN's Tom Rinaldi posed what usually would have been a softball question: "How does the reality differ from your dreams?"

The headlines were supposed to be about Williams' bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title and Osaka trying to become Japan's first Slam victor, but instead Williams' argument with umpire Carlos Ramos that escalated dominated the match. "I think maybe both of us (her and Serena) have this really big sister connection". Osaka said. "Everyone knows this". Everyone knows this. It's on the commercials, it's everywhere. "At the same time, I feel like even though I should enjoy this moment, I should still think of it as another match". I don't know, I hope Serena isn't mad at me.

She resumed arguing with Ramos later, saying, "You stole a point from me". "I was very impressed by her mental strength".

The game penalty put Osaka 5-3 up and the 20-year-old Japanese kept her cool to pull off the win. Not since Maria Sharapova was 19 in 2006 has the U.S. Open had a younger women's champion.

The Asahi newspaper described how Osaka's unpretentious, sometimes humorous responses in post-match interviews and news conferences have won over spectators and journalists alike.

Trailing in the second set, Williams received a game penalty after being involved in a verbal altercation with umpire Carlos Ramos at a change of ends, after previous code violations for coaching and then smashing her racquet. What will stay with her is the hug at the net afterward, and Williams' kind words during the trophy presentation, when she asked a booing crowd to focus its intention on Osaka's moment.

"I love you, Serena", she added before adding "I love you, mom; I love everybody". But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have equal - like Cornet should be able to take off her shirt without getting a fine.

The Yomiuri newspaper said: "The combination of her strength and childlike innocence is her charm", and hailed Osaka as "a new heroine Japan can be proud of". Naomi Osaka would go on to with the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Williams suffered life-threatening complications after the birth on September 1 of previous year, requiring four surgeries to deal with blood clots.

"Because I'm a woman, you're going to take this away from me?" she yelled.

"I never had any warning in my career for coaching". They both played superb tennis throughout the US Open.

Briefly, Williams appeared to be working her way back into the match, breaking Osaka for the only time to go up 3-1 in the second set.

One day there's likely to be a 24th Grand Slam title for Serena Williams, but it wasn't Saturday.

Williams lost to Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon, but has hit a higher level in NY, her latest outstanding display leading to a 6-3 6-0 victory over Sevastova. I colored it and everything.

Osaka, who grew up in NY, was up next in what was a hard spot for a less experienced player: "I know that everyone was cheering for her and I'm sorry it had to end like this", she said.
