SpaceX To Name Mystery Moon Traveler

Who Is SpaceX's Mystery Moon Passenger

SpaceX has been hyping the planned Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) Lunar Mission as an epic trip.

The Japanese billionaire said he would expect the artists to use the experience as inspiration to create a new piece of art, adding that their masterpieces "will inspire the dreamer within all of us".

SpaceX founder Elon Musk announces the first private passenger to fly round the moon in LA.

Last year, Musk said the BFR's admittedly "ambitious" goal was to make a test flight to Mars in 2022, followed by a crewed flight to the Red Planet in 2024. He said about BFR, it's "making people excited about the future - about getting up in the morning".

Maezawa didn't immediately say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but in response to a question from a reporter he said he'd consider inviting Musk. "Musk said that it is probably around $5 billion "a large amount of money but small for a project of this nature" and then elaborated by saying that "it won't be more than $10 billion or less than $2 billion". Musk said that he wants the BFR to be configured so as to allow passengers ot take the fullest advantage of weightless ness since "fun is very under rated".

The reusable 118-meter (387-foot) rocket will have its own dedicated passenger ship.

"Lasting about a week, the journey will come as close as 125 miles to the Moon's surface", SpaceX tweeted, "before completing lunar transit and returning back to Earth".

It also aims to build a staffed gateway near the moon during the 2020s.

The Japanese billionaire is most famous outside Japan for his record-breaking $110 million purchase of an untitled 1982 Jean-Michel Basquiat painting. Maezawa has been active in the art community for some time, including establishing the Contemporary Art Foundation in 2012 to support young artists.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk described Maezawa as the "bravest" and "best adventurer".

SpaceX announced in February 2017 that two people had signed up for a weeklong trek around the moon, which the company aimed to launch before the end of 2018. Musk did not name the clients past year or say how much they would pay. SpaceX has pulled off feats no one thought possible, from the first successful launch to orbit a decade ago to earlier this year, when the maiden flight of its Falcon Heavy rocket put a Tesla Roadster on a trip toward Mars.

Russian and Chinese companies are also working on space tourism plans. The trip was organized by the Virginia-based company Space Adventures, which has since sent several more paying customers on spaceflights. But given that SpaceX nearly always meets ot exceeds its plans - even if their target date is off - the intent is clearly focused on making this mission happen.

The BFR will be constructed at a SpaceX facility in Los Angeles and is being created to handle everything from missions to Earth orbit to long-term cargo and crew missions to Mars.

Asked why the company made further changes, Musk said he "did not like the aesthetics" of the previous version. The entrepreneur drew widespread condemnation after baselessly calling a British diver involved in the rescue of a trapped Thai soccer team a "pedo guy" in July. And last month he tweeted that his new jet's interior is being fashioned by luxury label Hermes.
