Trump Demands Probe of Author Behind Anonymous Op-Ed

Trump White House

He told reporters, "It's not mine" and said The Times should not "have chosen to take a disgruntled deceptive bad actor's word for anything and put it in their newspaper".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions "should be investigating who the author of that piece was because I really believe it's national security".

Trump said the senior administration official probably has a security clearance and has access to high-level meetings on national security strategy.

The op-ed ashed the President as amoral and claimed there is a "resistance" within the administration.

"I could think of four or five, mostly people that either I don't like or don't respect", he said.

Trump, for his part, said that "unelected, Deep State operatives who defy the voters to push their own secret agendas are truly a threat to democracy itself". Trump appears to be absolutely fixated on finding the identity of the op-ed writer, but uninterested in addressing the very real concerns the piece raises.

"Nearly 62 million people voted for President Donald J. Trump in 2016, earning him 306 Electoral College votes - versus 232 for his opponent".

In response, Sessions's spokeswoman, Sarah Isgur Flores, said only that "the department doesn't confirm or deny investigations".

The president has called on the Department of Justice to investigate the matter and says he is considering legal action against the New York Times for publishing the story.

Mr. Trump said he was also considering action against The Times, though he did not elaborate.

"A lot of people have said they didn't do, nearly all of the high-level people have said that". He insisted that the White House was a well-oiled machine and blamed a vengeful, corrupt news media for the appearance of disarray.

It all started with the release of extracts from Bob Woodward's new book with claims that staff removed documents from President Trump's desk to prevent him from making rash and potentially risky decisions.

But I believe the anonymous official in The New York Times, however high or low that person might be. "If senior administration officials think the president of the United States is not able to do his job, then they should invoke the 25th Amendment", Warren told CNN.

Trump's lawyers and supporters have argued that as president he is empowered not only to hire and fire whomever he chooses but that he can also inject himself into law enforcement matters.

The party's "central organising principle in foreign policy was the fight against communism and now they're cozying up to the former head of the KGB", he said.

"Nobody knows who the hell he is, or she, although they put he, but probably that's a little disguised".
