Trump ready to set tariffs on all goods from China

Trump is urging the Cupertino-based company to "start building new plants now".

Trump, speaking on Friday aboard Air Force One, said the administration had tariffs planned for an additional $US267 billion ($A376 billion) worth of Chinese goods.

At the same time, Apple is already using components sourced from USA manufacturers in some of its products.

As trade relations between the two countries continue to get strained, Apple said in a letter to the United States trade representative that the move would "hurt" the company, according to CNBC report.

"Exciting!" President Trump said, advising the tech giant over Twitter on Saturday as his motorcade drove from the White House to his Virginia golf club. For example, the proposed tariffs cover Apple Watch, which has become the top-selling smart-watch in the US and globally.

The company told trade officials in a letter on Friday that the proposed tariffs would affect prices for a "wide range" of Apple products, including its watch.

The presidential tweet is the latest salvo in a dispute between the Trump administration and companies that fear tariffs will hurt their business.

Apple also said that computer parts for its US operations would be hit by the tariffs.

China's trade surplus with the United States reached a record $31 billion in August, despite hefty tariffs recently imposed on Chinese goods.

Apple, in pushing back on the tariff proposal, said it bought more than $50 billion worth of components from US-based suppliers previous year and that it's the largest United States corporate tax payer.

Speaking just hours after the period for public reactions to the $200 billion China duties list he had set ended, Trump told reporters overseas Air Force One that he was "being strong on China because [he had] to be". "As a result, tariffs will ultimately reduce the economic benefit we generate for the United States", the company writes. Apple said "it is hard to see" how tariffs would advance the government's goal.

Chinese exports to the United States rose to US$44.4 billion in August, a 13.2 per cent increase from the same period previous year, according to customs data.
