At least 14 children and teachers die in Jordan flood

At least 17 dead, dozens missing in Dead Sea floods

Thirty-four people were rescued in an operation involving helicopters and army troops, police chief Brigadier General Farid al Sharaa told state television.

Among the dead were children who were aboard a school bus when the flooding hit, sweeping them away.

Relatives of those affected have been gathering outside a local hospital, waiting for news. The Minister of Public Sector Development along with CDD are at the scene to follow up with the rescue efforts and the search of missing persons.

A student lays on a stretcher at a hospital after a bus accident near the Dead Sea in Jordan on October 25, 2018.

The Beirut municipality cautioned residents to take necessary precautions, saying heavy rains and flooding could block streets and damage properties in the capital, the Daily Star newspaper reported.

"[The floodwaters] swept away the students for 4 to 5 kilometers [2-3 miles]", Brig.

"The students were on a school trip and it appears that a mudslide along the road swept their bus away", the official added. They were caught in a narrow stream as sudden torrential rainstorm flooded the area.

Late on Thursday, 10 more students and a teacher were found and awaiting rescue, media reports said.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel Air Force (AIF) helicopters were assisting the search and rescue operation following a request from the Jordanian government.

Civil defence spokesman Captain Iyad al Omar told Reuters the number of casualties was expected to rise.

A bridge on one of the cliffs of the Dead Sea had collapsed with the intensity of the rains, the first such heavy rains after the end of the summer season.

Regarding the accident, the Jordanian Ministry of Education indicated in a statement, that they are going to open an official investigation of what happened and pointed out that "the school did not have permission to travel" through the Dead Sea area.
