Brett Kavanaugh takes his place on bench

People hoping to see Justice Brett Kavanaugh's first day on the Supreme Court bench are waiting in long lines outside the court.

The 13-point gap is almost double the seven-point advantage Democrats had in a Quinnipiac poll released October 2, before the Senate voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court after a bruising partisan battle. After weeks of being painted as an existential threat to women's rights and, indeed, a serial predator, the newly-minuted justice made history by bringing on SCOTUS' first ever all-female slate of law clerks.

Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Court was marred by accusations of sexual misconduct and Trump used the ceremony to press a message he believes resonates with his base in the face of the #MeToo movement - "In our country, a man or a woman, must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty", he said - before turning to Kavanaugh and asserting: "I must state that you sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent".

The Kavanaugh confirmation has blown open the midterm elections from being a national referendum on Trump's stewardship to a raw emotional discussion over the lack of women in power and how to handle sexual misconduct allegations. SCOTUS now has a 5-4 Conservative majority, and the Bench could swing further to the right if Donald Trump gets a second term and therefore, the chance to appoint replacements for liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 85, and Stephen Breyer, 80.

Between Thursday and Saturday of last week, the Capitol Police arrested more than 544 protesters related to the Kavanaugh nomination. Kavanaugh officially became a member of the high court Saturday.

Boarding the Marine One helicopter at the White House ahead of a trip to Florida, he branded the sexual assault allegations that threatened to derail Kavanaugh's path to the top court "a hoax" and "all made up, fabricated". "My goal is to be a great justice for all Americans and for all of America".

After an extra Federal Bureau of Investigation probe - which media reports say was drastically curtailed by the White House - also found nothing new, Kavanaugh was finally voted into the coveted post.

Since justices serve lifetime appointments, the political consequences are likely to last long beyond Trump's administration.

He denied the allegations and in a blistering partisan attack during a Senate hearing on Sept 27, accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit".

Ultimately, every Democrat voted against Kavanaugh except for Sen. Only one Democrat voted for Trump´s nominee.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch joined the court past year.

Kavanaugh's ceremonial swearing-in has some historical precedent, as most of the current members of the Supreme Court had some White House aspect to their oath-takings, even if they already had been done so privately and even started work.

Grassley also told Martha MacCallum that if he still chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, it would not consider a Supreme Court nomination if a vacancy came up in 2020.

"The Senate in the hands of one party and the White House in the hands of another in a presidential election year", McConnell said, according to the Washington Examiner.

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with several seats up for grabs in November.

McConnell spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS' "Face the Nation".
