Climate change could cause beer shortages and double prices

"One of the greatest challenges as a scientist doing research on climate change and food is to illustrate it in a way that people can understand", U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist Lewis Ziska told the Associated Press in an email.

By volume, beer is by far the most popular alcoholic drink in the world, with almost 200 billion litres produced in 2017. What will be the climate change impact on luxury essentials?

In the United Kingdom, beer consumption could fall by between 0.37 billion and 1.33 billion litres, while the price could as much as double. A best-case scenario would see drinking fall by 4% and a 15% price rise. The team put this output into a social economic model that included beer production estimates and worldwide trading forecasts.

Yields of barley - beer's main ingredient - declined sharply in periods of extreme drought and heat with average yield losses ranging from 3% to 17%, depending on the severity of the conditions. "People's diet security is equally important to food security in many aspects of society", Guan said. Overall, consumption is expected to fall by 16%; equal to roughly how much beer was imbibed in the USA in 2011. Using models of both economic activity and climate change, the group made predictions about what will happen to barley production, as well as beer price and consumption.

"The public may care more about the changing climate after realizing how it will affect their weekend parties, socialization and even their watching of the World Cup", the researcher said. And the results of these two were given as inputs into a third, an algorithm that modelled the economy and showed price fluctuations of barley and beer.

In Ireland, a leading beer-consuming nation, prices could triple, the study says.

To avert a beer-brewing disaster, researchers are encouraging policymakers to act now on climate change and throw their support behind policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the world by volume consumed, said researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK.

"That's comparable to all the beer consumption in the United States", he added, "Future climate and pricing conditions could put beer out of reach for hundreds of millions of people around the world".

Here in the US, two thirds of the barley crop is used to make beer. Increased price for a beer pint in a shop or pub could result in the alcoholic beverage becoming a luxurious good and unaffordable for the people belonging to the working class. This research, he said, was "born of love and fear".

Beer joins other "luxury products" like coffee and wine that may be severely impacted by climate change.
