Donald Trump may send USA troops to Mexico border, migrants remain undeterred

Pentagon sends 800 troops to US-Mexico border as migrant caravan advances

Despite the Trump administration's claims that the migrants are trying to enter "illegally", current USA law allows foreign nationals to apply for asylum at a port of entry at the border. When asked about Trump's tweets critical of the caravan and his vows to keep them out, they have generally responded that he should stop attacking them and said they would keep trying to reach the United States. No one at CBP, including the Border Patrol, endorses this activity.

CNN first reported the development, saying Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was expected to send 800 or more troops.

KRGV's Christian von Preysing spoke with several property owners about the agency's efforts.

Trump previously said he would send the military to the border if Mexican authorities failed to stop the caravan, which they have.

Trump has used the caravan to bolster his election-season warnings that the U.S.is being infiltrated by immigrants "pouring across the border" illegally. There already are about 2,000 National Guard troops assisting at the border under a previous Pentagon arrangement.

Any attempt to block the entry of Central American migrants is likely to prompt legal challenges, though Trump is likely emboldened following a Supreme Court ruling earlier this summer that affirmed the president's right to bar the entry of migrants who "would be detrimental to the interests of the United States".

Mr Trump said on Twitter on Thursday that he was "bringing out the military for this National Emergency" and promised immigrants unlawfully crossing the border "will be stopped!" National Guard troops can perform those same functions, so it was not immediately clear why active-duty forces were sought.

He told them to return to their home countries and if they want, they can apply for citizenship status like millions of others are doing.

Officials said the deployment that Mattis is expected to approve would be legal, however, because the troops would be serving in a support role, rather than performing policing or law enforcement duties themselves.

But Nielsen warned: "This caravan can not come to the United States". On Friday, Nielsen is scheduled to travel to California to visit a newly constructed border barrier that the Department of Homeland Security describes as "President Trump's 30-foot border wall". "The president should not be using the military to further a partisan agenda". "Wait'll you see what happens over the next couple of weeks".
