Federer sets up Shanghai q'final with Nishikori

Super World Cup Novak Djokovic suggests creation of a new tennis event

Djokovic remains on court to grab injured Rafael Nadal's year-end No 1 ranking and he will now face the victor of the second semi-final between top seed and defending champion Roger Federer and highly-rated Croatian youngster Borna Coric.

Djokovic saved set point in the opener before taking control of the tie break and the second set to dump out the South African seventh seed in efficient fashion.

Second seed Djokovic enjoyed a measure of revenge as he booked his spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-0 demolition of Marco Cecchinato. Speaking in a recent press conference, Federer said: 'I think it definitely feels different, yeah, because everybody comes up to you and says, You're the best. I think, quite similar in style of the play to today's match.

Second seed Djokovic, who has returned to his brutal best this season with Grand Slam wins at Wimbledon and the U.S Open, will surpass Federer as world number two when the next edition of the ATP rankings are released on Monday.

Federer led Bautista Agut by a set and a service break when he became entangled in a fight that lasted until the second-to-last game of the third set.

Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany also advanced to the quarterfinals by pasting Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-1, 6-4.

Federer finished the match with 10 aces and landed an impressive 71 percent of his first serves.

Coric, who defeated Federer in three sets at the Halle Open final in June, earned a break in the opening game of both sets on Sunday to wrap up the victory with an excellent forehand pass after 73 minutes.

Zverev is the fifth player to qualify for the season-ending tournament in London, joining Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro in the eight-player field.

"Obviously, I'm going to try to do everything I can to get to number one", said Djokovic.

"But I don't want to stop here, there's a lot more tennis going on".

"It's always easier to get there - but then staying there is always the tougher part".
