Former Chelsea and England captain Terry hangs up his boots

Thierry Henry lined up to be Elmohamady’s next manager – Reports

Former England skipper John Terry, who had recently announced his retirement from the worldwide football, has been appointed as the assistant coach of Birmingham based professional football club Aston Villa.

And it seems that move could be even closer after Terry took to Instagram to announce his retirement.

"I thank my parents, Sue and Ted, for the sacrifices they made for me as a boy, giving me the best opportunity to fulfil my dreams and become a professional footballer".

As well as Ake, Chelsea fans have also been pouring their support onto social media, with some even calling Terry the "best defender" they have seen.

John Terry has spoken of his delight about taking over as Aston Villa assistant manager, insisting he will be returning to a "club where I have great memories".

Smith, who has left fellow Championship side Brentford, will be assisted by Chelsea and England legend Terry.

Terry captained Essien and his other Chelsea teammates to nine trophies including the English Premier League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Champions League.

Terry, 37, failed to steer the club back to the Premier League as captain last term.

He also captained the club to last season's Championship play-off final, where they lost 1-0 to Fulham.

"So yeah, you can't rule me out because I have never been asked".

'Aston Villa Football Club is delighted to announce the appointments of Dean Smith as our new Head Coach, John Terry as Assistant Coach and Jesus Garcia Pitarch as Sporting Director. I hope I have done you all proud wearing the shirt and the armband.

Asked how vital he was to Chelsea's success, Redknapp added: There was Jose Mourinho, there was Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and many great players there but he was the leader.

"I am ready for the next chapter in my life and hopefully it bring at least half the success I had as a player".

He scored six goals in 78 appearances for England.
