Google to finally shut down Google Plus as massive security breach revealed

Social Network Google Plus Bug Exposed Data Of Lakhs To Be Shut Down

And an internal memo noted that while there wasn't any evidence of misuse on behalf of developers, there wasn't a way to know for sure whether any misuse took place. It said it had no evidence that any third-party developer was aware of the bug or had misused profile data.

One of Google+'s People APIs allowed 438 external apps to obtain users' names, email addresses, occupations, genders and ages, even for accounts that were made private.

According to the report, the glitch enabled outside developers to access the data between 2015 and March 2018 before the glitch was fixed, but Google concluded that nothing nefarious was done with the information.

Meanwhile, Google planned to add new workplace-oriented features to enhance the appeal of Google+ as a "secure corporate social network" to be used inside business operations.

The company said it will give consumers more control over what data apps can access.

Upon discovering the bug, Google patched it, but opted not to disclose it to the public out of fear of regulatory pressure and unfavorable comparisons to Facebook's Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal.

Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai has agreed to testify before Congress in the coming weeks, according to the Journal. In the meantime, Google says users should stay tuned for more information on how to download their data from the site, should they so desire. "Our goal is to support a wide range of useful apps, while ensuring that everyone is confident that their data is secure".

Google will limit Android apps' ability to access SMS data, call logs, and contacts.

Google has already drawn controversy over its data collection practices. This, combined with the community's extremely low user base-90% of Google+ sessions are under 5 seconds-were enough for Google to be done with it for good.

"The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations", Ben Smith, vice president of engineering, wrote in a blog post. A bug in its software left up to half a million users' profile data accessible to third-parties.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

As part of its response to the incident, the Alphabet Inc. unit plans to announce a sweeping set of data privacy measures that include permanently shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+, the people said.
