Inaugural Indigenous People's Day a celebration

While thousands of people are celebrating Columbus Day on Monday, more and more people and cities are refusing to observe the holiday - including Columbus, Ohio.

Instead, city officials have chosen instead to celebrate another federal holiday, Veteran's Day on November 12, a day during which the city normally remains open because it would require a paid holiday for all city employees.

Columbus, Ohio - the midwestern American city named after Christopher Columbus - is not celebrating the famed explorer's federally recognized holiday, and will instead honor military veterans in its place.

All PennDOT Driver License and Photo Centers will be closed statewide- including the center in Butler. The city only had a big enough budget to celebrate Columbus Day or Veterans Day this year, and since most of the workers are vets, officials said they chose to give them the day off in November. Cindi Byron-Dixon, one of the original members of the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee, said she and others from the committee worked for months to put together a resolution for City Council.

Many Italian-American groups, however, have criticized the protests and said that Columbus Day is one of pride in their culture. In 1971, it was fixed to the second Monday in October.

The organizers of the celebration actually expanded the event and now add people to the Columbus Day hall of fame. However, if you're expecting something from UPS, you're in luck - while the company recognizes Columbus Day, they don't close for the holiday.

She called Monday's celebration "a good step in the right direction", saying it's important to acknowledge the indigenous people "whose land we occupy here". The mayor's office has said this decision is not connected to the nationwide movement to rename Columbus Day as "Indigenous Peoples Day" because of Columbus's enslavement and exploitation of native people.

The city of Charlottesville started recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day in 2017, but Wood feels there is still work to be done.

He praised the "historic achievement" of Columbus and his men discovering the Americas, beginning the "Age of Discovery".

Cities hosting large Columbus Day observances include New York City, San Francisco and Denver, Colorado.

"I don't see a point in (Columbus Day)", he said. And South Dakota celebrates Native American Day. We are proud of our heritage. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made Columbus Day a national holiday.

"We want to honor and remember that and stand against the oppression that has occurred in American history with regards to our native populations", Ksander said. When the federal holiday was established, it was a "milestone" for Catholics and Italian immigrants, the pair wrote.
