Migrant Caravan Swells to 7000, Trump to CUT AID — CARAVAN CHAOS

Honduran migrants rest at the border in Tecun Uman on Friday

On Thursday, Trump branded the migrant caravan an "onslaught" and an "assault on our country" in a series of typically fiery tweets. Hundreds of locals driving pickups, vans and cargo trucks stopped to let them clamber aboard.

The migrants, whose numbers include children and elderly people, say they are simply trying to escape violence and poverty.

"My goal is to find work for a better future for my daughters", she said.

According to the U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. aid obligations this year are about $53 million to Guatemala, $20 million to El Salvador and $15 million to Honduras.

According to a press release by the U.S. Department of State, the United States is closely following the migrant invasion force, in which thousands of nationals from Honduras and other countries continue to make a unsafe journey through Guatemala and into Mexico.

After blaming the Democrats for "weak laws" on immigration a few days earlier, Mr Trump also said via Twitter that the "caravans are a disgrace to the Democrat party".

'The president is desperate to change the subject from health care to immigration because he knows that health care is the number one issue Americans care about, ' Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a joint statement on Saturday.

"In Mexico, we have the rule of law, and we shall apply-enforce the law, but there will also be a humanitarian way that we will think about the migrant in the first place", said Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray, minister of foreign affairs, to reporters in Mexico City.

"We asked for people to give us rides, we sold the little we had to come", she added. Many other immigrants waded across the Suchiate guided by a tow rope or took one of dozens of rafts that ply these waters daily.

Migrants marched on through Mexico shouting slogans like "Si se pudo!" or "Yes, we could!"

It was clear though that more migrants were continuing to join the caravan.

Their destination Sunday was the city of Tapachula in Chiapas state. They walked in a line stretching about a mile.

On Friday Mexican authorities began allowing a trickle of migrants, starting with women and children, to pass through the gates and board buses bound for refugee camps.

"You have to help the next person". "If they stop us now, we'll just come back a second time".

But on Friday morning, thousands tried to cross the border en masse, surging past Guatemalan border guards before being turned back by a contingent of unarmed Mexican riot police officers.

Mexican federal police have monitored the caravan's progress from helicopters and have escorted it as well.

Organizers of the caravan said a section of the crowd had confronted the police and spoiled what had been an orderly attempt to cross into Mexico. They were not detained on reaching the Mexican bank.

"One can not live back there", said Fidelina Vasquez, a grandmother traveling with her daughter and 2-year-old grandson, standing next to the main border gate.

He told supporters at rallies... "They've really stepped up, and it will not be forgotten".

"I would call in the military and I would seal off the border".

Ahead of the November 6 midterms, Trump has sought to turn the caravan into a symbol of the larger issue of immigration, which the White House believes can be used to drive up turnout among the Republican base.

"In this way, we confront the phenomenon of migration, because he who leaves his town does not leave for pleasure but out of necessity", he added. The Mexican authorities accepted small groups for asylum processing and handed out 45-day visitor permits to others, reports the Associated Press.

The women and children had spent the night on the bridge where hundreds slept in the open, as well as in the main square of the Guatemalan border town of Tecun Uman.

"We're warriors, we got to get to the place we got to get to".

"We are going to get to the border of the USA", he said.
