Next battle in war over Kavanaugh: FBI probe

Supreme Court Justice Kagan won’t discuss Kavanaugh

On the eve of his Boston visit, US Senator Jeff Flake shed some more light on how he was approached by protestors in an elevator last week and why he chose to ask for a one-week FBI investigation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during a "60 Minutes" interview that aired on CBS Sunday night.

Leaving the hearing on Friday, Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from IL, said it was his understanding there would be an FBI investigation of "the outstanding allegations, the three of them", but Republicans have not said whether that was their understanding as well.

Speaking at a news conference at the White House on the reworked free trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico, Mr Trump said he wanted the investigation to "go quickly".

It's been four days since President Trump officially ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to do another background check on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

President Donald Trump bowed to pressure from moderate members of his Republican Party on Friday and ordered the probe after Christine Blasey Ford, a university professor, detailed her allegations at a Senate hearing that Kavanaugh assaulted her in 1982, when the two were in high school.

Mr Kavanaugh's high school friend Mark Judge, who Ms Ford says was in the room when a drunken Mr Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her, said that he will cooperate with any law enforcement agency that will "confidentially investigate" sexual misconduct allegations against him and Mr Kavanaugh.

After the hearing, the White House ordered an FBI investigation into the allegations, at the request of Republican senators.

Although the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday approved Judge Kavanaugh's nomination, it was conditional on a new inquiry into what it said were the "credible allegations" facing him.

Politely but firmly tell them you stand with Judge Kavanaugh and demand a "yes" vote on his confirmation. "It's so unfair to his kids and his wife".

US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was a "frequent, heavy drinker" at college who staggered, slurred his words and became belligerent and aggressive, a former classmate has said.

"It has to be well beyond the initial very narrow scope of four witnesses, four individuals being interviewed", Democratic Senator Chris Coons, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, said. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation.

Advocates for Madison say he now suffers from dementia and can not remember the fatal shooting that sent him to death row.

Trump has denied the allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him. Some White House officials point to private polling and focus groups that show once-apathetic Republican voters are galvanized by the Kavanaugh fight and more apt to vote in November. Stephens has penned op-eds with titles like, "Why I'm Still a Never-Trumper" and "Trump Will Have Blood on his Hands".

The FBI has interviewed a man who Christine Blasey Ford said attended the same party where she said she was attacked by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in the 1980s. "Instead, it seems that the Republican goal is to be able to say there was an investigation and it didn't change their view, while the Democrats hope for incriminating evidence to derail the nominee".

What will the FBI investigation do?

But the White House has denied "micro-managing" the review. "And if people don't believe that they have no reason to accept what the court does". Trump asked, mentioning a term he has used in the past to denigrate Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's role in the 2016 USA presidential election.

The stunning reversal capped two weeks of allegations, followed by furious denials, that roiled prospects for Trump's nominee, a conservative federal appeals court judge once expected to easily become the second Trump nominee to win a lifetime appointment to the top USA court. Ford has said she came forward only after her named leaked out and reporters started contacting her.
