She gone: Google+ network closes indefinitely after security breach

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

Through the social network of Google+, data from hundreds of thousands of users has been exposed for years, and was discovered by Google this spring.

The company says it discovered and patched the issue in March but decided not to disclose it immediately.

That decision could run afoul of relatively new rules in California and Europe governing when a company must disclose a security incident.

Google announced that it is going to shut down its social network platform Google Plus because of the massive data breach.

"None of these thresholds were met here", they said. As a result of a software bug related to the APIs used for Google+, 438 apps potentially had access to names, birthdates, email addresses, profile photos, occupations and more data covering 496,951 Google+ users. But Google says it has no way of confirming these numbers or which users may have had their data exposed improperly.

App access to user Gmail data will be limited to fewer use cases, Smith said.

"The snafu threatens to give Google a black eye on privacy after public assurances that it was less susceptible to data gaffes like those that have befallen Facebook", the Journal said.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the company didn't disclose to its customers the data breach for fear of damaging its reputation as well as facing a potential for a regulatory inquiry. It is a root-and-branch review of third-party developer access to Google accounts and Android device data and of our philosophy around apps' data access, he wrote.

"And it raises the question: If Google hid this breach from the public, how do we know there aren't others?"

"Users have the right to be notified if their information could have been compromised", said Friedman CyZen managing director Jacob Lehmann, attributing Google's actions to the scrutiny that Facebook received after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

After seven highly unsuccessful years, Google+ is effectively dead. The company was the target of a massive class action lawsuit in the United Kingdom after 4 million users had their personal data collected and allegedly used for targeted advertising.
