Trump expresses suspicion about United Nations climate report

Scientists said "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" are required to limit the possibility of irreversible environmental damage.

Scientists have said the impacts of climate change, from droughts to rising seas, will be less extreme if temperature rises are curbed at 1.5C above pre-industrial levels than if they climb to 2C, the UN-backed study said.

The findings of the report will be used by policy makers at a conference in Poland this December to review the Paris agreement.

The corresponding October 8, 2018 IPCC "Summary for Policymakers of IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C approved by governments" press release lays out report findings, perhaps the most important of which is: "Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society, the IPCC said in a new assessment".

"The good news is that some of the kinds of actions that would be needed to limit global warming to 1.5ºC are already underway around the world, but they would need to accelerate", one researcher said.

Another says an ice-free Arctic Ocean during summer could happen once per century with a 1.5 degree rise as opposed to at least once per decade if temperatures go up two degrees.

But most governments now fear the cost of a global overhaul of the world's energy economy in the short time needed to meet the Paris climate goals. The Paris-based institution envisioned coal maintaining 6% share of the power generation market and gas 16% by 2040 under one pathway that's compatible with 2 degrees of warming.

The IPCC's "Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees" was released in Incheon, South Korea, on Monday via a livestream Internet broadcast.

The signatories of the Paris Agreement would have to make sweeping changes to everything from industry and building, to land use, how cities run, and, of course, how we produce energy. Global emissions need to be cut be 45% from 2010 levels by 2030, and renewables will need to make up at least 85% of electricity production by 2050 with coal use down to almost zero.

Jones' has continued to harp that insurers must act soon, despite indications in past reports that the real effects of climate change are a ways off. Allowing the global temperature to temporarily exceed or "overshoot" 1.5ºC would mean a greater reliance on techniques that remove Carbon dioxide from the air to return global temperatures to below 1.5°C by 2100.

But the report said the efficacy of measures, such as planting forests, bioenergy use or capturing and storing CO2, were unproven at a large scale and carried some risks.

On Monday, the United Nations issued "its most urgent call to arms yet for the world to confront the threat of climate change", say Mark Landler and Coral Davenport in the New York Times.

"EGU concurs with, and supports, the findings of the SR15 that action to curb the most risky consequences of human-induced climate change is urgent, of the utmost importance and the window of opportunity extremely limited".

"My plan also includes a promise to cancel billions and billions of dollars in climate change spending for the United Nations", he said in a campaign speech in 2016.

The report was prepared under the scientific leadership of all three IPCC working groups. "We must raise our ambitions in combating climate change in line with the outcome of this report, and turn today's challenges into opportunities".

Annica Ekman, President of the EGU Atmospheric Sciences Division, noted: "If anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions continue at the same rate, we will most likely reach a warming of 1.5°C as early as 2030 and no later than 2052".
