Windows 10 Update Pulled After Users Report Deleted Photos and Files

Microsoft can recover lost files Windows 10 October 2018 Update - But You Need To Call Them

According to Microsoft, a very small number of users lost files after installing Windows 10 October 2018 Update and it occurred on systems that had Known Folder Redirection (KFR) enabled, but files remained in the original "old" folder location vs being moved to the new, redirected location. However, that didn't go quite well, as many problems began arising for users who were updating to the newest version of Windows 10.

"While we can not guarantee the outcome of any file recovery work, if you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files, please minimise your use of the affected device and contact us directly", Cable said, tendering an apology "for any impact these issues may have had on any of our customers".

Users who are affected by the issue are missing files and folders in their "Documents" folder.

Users who lost files typically had Known Folder Redirection set up, but the files hadn't been moved, Cable explained.

Implementation of code to remove empty duplicate known folders automatically during upgrade.

Microsoft discovered in its investigation that the issue impacted one one-hundredth of one percent of version 1809 installs.

Quietly, Microsoft took the opportunity to fix a bug that saw user profiles being deleted due to an incorrect timing calculation. This is the feature that lets you move a known folder like C:\Users\Name\Downloads to D:\Downloads, for example. You can head over to Microsoft to learn about Windows 10 1709 known issues; there are none with the April 2018 Update. "That change, combined with another change to the update construction sequence, resulted in the deletion of the original "old" folder locations and their content, leaving only the new "active" folder intact".

So just bear this in mind if you have successfully installed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

The feature is built-in to the Windows operating system.

Windows 10 1809 won't be broadly released until early adopters in the Windows Insider program have tested the revised update and provided feedback to Microsoft. You keep can saving files into the usual Downloads folder, for instance, and it's actually saved on another drive with free space, in other words.

Microsoft enabled new feedback functionality today that adds options to classify impact and severity of the reported issue.

The new version also received patches for a range of critical remote code execution vulnerabilities, as part of Microsoft's regular monthly Patch Wednesday security updates.

For those who are affected, they should call Microsoft at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area. Also, Microsoft Support and our retail stores customer service personnel are available at no charge to help customers.
