Meet the winners who have made history in the 2018 midterms

Texas is sending its first ever Hispanic women to congress, as Veronica Escobar snapped up Beto O'Rouke's old seat and state Sen.

(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state. For example, the next Congress will feature a record number of women of color, as well as a record number of non-incumbent women, according to the Rutgers University Center for American Women and Politics.

Women now hold 96 out of the 435 House of Representative seats, a record number set on Tuesday night.

The first black woman elected to represent MA in Congress is Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley, who faced no Republican on Tuesday. Meanwhile the Arizona senate race is too close to call, but either Republican or Democrat, the victor will be the state's first woman in the seat. New York's Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Kansas' Sharice Davids and New Mexico's Deb Haaland are the country's first Native American congresswomen.

In Massachusetts, Ayanna Pressley ran unopposed as a Democrat and became the first black woman to represent the commonwealth in Congress.

Before scoring her party's primary victory in August, she made history in Minnesota when she was elected to the state House in 2016, becoming the nation's first Somali-American legislator. 65 of those are incumbent reps, with 31 newly elected women.

Though prominent figures like Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for governor of Florida, failed to win their potentially historic elections, many candidates around the country became the first person of their gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation to be elected to their positions in their states, or in some cases, in the country.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib from MI became the first two Muslim women to win election to Congress. In 2014, the most recent off-presidential midterm election year, Democrats won the U.S. House vote among women, even though Republicans overwhelmingly secured overall control of the chamber.

VoteCast reported that more women voted for Democratic candidates than men.

And several of the female candidates broke records of their own.

(8) Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the highest ranking Republican woman in Congress, comfortably won re-election last night.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman-elect for New York's 14th district. Thus far, 82 of the 94 women elected to the House this year, as well as nine of the 12 elected to the Senate, are Democrats. She became a progressive star after her upset primary victory over Republican Joseph Crowley, a high-ranking House Democrat.
