President Donald Trump Tweetstorm - The Sunday Edition

Mexico's incoming government has denied reports that it has agreed to allow asylum seekers to wait in the country while their claims move through USA immigration courts, one of several options the Trump administration has been pursuing in negotiations for months.

According to the Washington Post, the two sides have agreed in principle that asylum seekers will wait in Mexico for courts to assess their claims-and anyone denied gets sent back to their home country.

Mexico's incoming interior minister said there was "no agreement of any type between the future government of Mexico and the United States".

"The next federal administration does not consider in its plans that Mexico assumes the status of "third safe country" for the attention of Central American migrants or citizens of other countries that are in Mexican territory, nor for those who have that intention in the future".

Trump did turn to Twitter on Saturday evening to discuss the migrant matter, vowing that those at the U.S. -Mexico border wouldn't be permitted into America "until their claims are individually approved in court".

"No "Releasing" into the US", Trump said in a tweet late Saturday.

The deal was seen as a way to dissuade thousands of Central American migrants from seeking asylum in the US, a process that can take years.

Jesus Ramirez Cuevas, a spokesperson for AMLO, also denied that the incoming government has reached a deal with the Trump administration.

The conflicting statements emerged after the Washington Post reported Mexican officials had agreed to let migrants trying to enter the USA stay in Mexico while their asylum claims were heard.

He said it would be "very SMART" if Mexico would stop them "long before they get to our Southern Border, or if originating countries would not let them form". The government of new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will enter office on December 1.

"For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico", the Post quoted Sanchez Cordero as saying.

Democrats and human rights activists are likely to be concerned about the "Remain in Mexico" strategy, and in the past have expressed concern it may put migrants at risk and make it more hard for them to apply for asylum.

Robledo said the incoming government wanted to find jobs for Central American migrants in sectors that are short-staffed, such as maquila assembly plants.

Mr Trump also said the United States would consider closing the southern border if the administration deemed it necessary, and has said he would use lethal force on the migrants.

The White House celebrated the agreement as a sign of an improving relationship with Mexico.

His tweets were interpreted as possible confirmation of the alleged deal between the US and Obrador's administration.

"They're going to have to open the borders [for the migrants] to put in the request", Vences said.
