'There were children,' says migrant mother tear-gassed at USA border

The leader said his policy was 'America first'

The mayor of Tijuana has declared a humanitarian crisis in his border city and says that he has asked the United Nations for aid to deal with thousands of Central American migrants who have arrived.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to border control agents and asking to seek asylum", Scott said.

It is reported that thousands of migrants attempted to "rush" the border barriers before they were beaten back by U.S. border patrol agents. As they reached a bridge and stairway that leads to a square near the USA border, they were stopped by Mexican authorities, who told them to wait for permission.

More than 5,000 migrants are now residing in the border city of Tijuana, according to reports, which has drawn the ire of the mayor.

The incident lasted almost two hours, with two groups of migrants tear gassed after they crossed the Tijuana River, eventually returning to a stadium where they've camped for days, waiting for the opportunity to apply for asylum.

The same tear gas agent that the Trump administration is taking heat for deploying against a border mob this weekend is actually used fairly frequently - including a few times a month during some years under President Obama, according to Homeland Security data.

These migrants face extreme restrictions imposed by the USA government on being able to present their claims to asylum through the port of entry (according to press accounts, 80 people were allowed through the port of entry on Friday, which was cut to 40 on Saturday and Sunday).

"Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries", Trump wrote on Twitter. "You've seen them, they're carrying signs, 'I want a job.' That doesn't qualify for asylum".

However Mr Trump, the United States president, and government agencies involved defended the response and insisted on the need to secure the border with Mexico.

Another five to six thousand are not far behind, now part of caravans snaking their way across central Mexico in search of border crossings where they can declare asylum.

Mexican government officials have had no immediate response. "Many Tijuanans work, study, and visit the United States in healthy peace".

US lawmakers face a deadline to approve funding for the federal government by December 7. During his presidential election campaign, Trump promised he would have Mexico pay for the wall.

She and hundreds of other Central American migrants were blocked by Mexican police and staged a protest in front of the border, some rushing the U.S fence.

As migrants tried to cross the border, authorities on the United States side used tear gas to disperse them.

The agency said that officers chose to use the tear gas "because of the risk to agents' safety".

"Tear gassing families seems unnecessary", Lee Gelernt, the deputy director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project, told CNN.

"We've got to look at the facts here".

The migrants involved in Sunday's incident were a fraction of a caravan of more than 5,000 that is now stuck in limbo in Tijuana.

Critics said this was aimed largely at bringing the immigration issue to the fore with his core supporters.

Democrats in Congress want more comprehensive immigration reform in addition to additional border security, but strongly oppose Mr Trump's wall.

"We can't have all these people here", he said.

After travelling north from Honduras and spending a week in the Mexican border town of Tijuana, Maria Meza, 35, set out on Sunday with her five children to claim asylum at the U.S. border crossing. Instead, the plan would require asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until their asylum status is granted.
