Turkish police search luxury villa for Khashoggi's remains, state media say

Saudi phone call tied to Khashoggi killing Prosecutors

Police searched a villa in the Samanli village of the Termal district in Yalova, the agency said.

The same three-story villa in Yalova was raided by roughly 40 policemen on October 23 according to the Hurriyet newspaper, after it was discovered that one of the members of the Saudi hit squad who allegedly killed Khashoggi had called the owner of the villa on the day of the murder.

After learning this, authorities initiated the search of the Saudi businessman's villas, Anadolu added, but he was not in Turkey during the phone calls with the suspects.

Khashoggi, a Saudi national, was murdered on October 2 while visiting the Saudi embassy in Istanbul. The focus of the search was a well on the grounds of the first villa, which was being drained of water with special equipment brought to the scene, the agency reported.

Investigators descended on the mansion and a neighbouring property in the province of Yalova, south of Istanbul, as part of their ongoing search for the body of the murdered Washington Post columnist.

Turkish authorities have also previously carried out inspections at the kingdom's consulate and the consul general's residence in Istanbul.

Officials told Reuters last month that Khashoggi's killers may have dumped his remains at a rural location near Yalova, which is a 90-km (55 mile) drive southeast of Istanbul.

Turkish officials have said a 15-member assassination squad sent from Riyadh strangled and dismembered Khashoggi.

A Tunisian journalists' union hung a large banner from its headquarters showing the prince holding a chainsaw - a reference to the dismemberment of Khashoggi's corpse.

Saudi Arabia initially said Khashoggi walked out of the consulate before shifting its account of what happened amid Turkish intelligence leaks.

Ankara insists the orders for the killing came from the highest levels of the Saudi government, but not King Salman.

Riyadh is now seeking the death penalty for five members of the hit team in a move that appeared to be aimed at appeasing global furor over the killing and distancing the killers from the crown prince.

His death has put the Riyadh regime and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman under strict scrutiny.
