Canada sanctions 17 Saudis linked to Khashoggi killing

Pompeo: No Direct Link Between Crown Prince, Khashoggi Death

The sanctions will freeze the assets of those individuals in Canada, said the country's foreign minister in a statement.

Several senators said they were angry about the absence of CIA Director Gina Haspel from the pre-vote briefing. Former President Barack Obama relied on those authorisations to conduct a global war on terror, including the USA campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIL) in Syria.

Human Rights Watch had asked Argentina on November 26 to use a war crimes clause in its constitution to investigate any involvement by the crown prince in possible crimes against humanity in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia has launched a military campaign, and the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Modi invited Saudi Arabia to join the initiative of the International Solar Energy Federation and the crown prince announced the Kingdom's acceptance of the invitation. Mr. Trump's apparent hesitancy to meet separately with the crown prince could set the tone if indeed the president sticks by his initial decision. In terms of our work with our allies to seek a coordinated response.

The Canadian government has called for full accountability for those responsible for the killing and a transparent and credible investigation, she added. "These are not accusations that we can make lightly".

The Utah Republican said in a Senate floor speech that continuing to support the Saudis, especially in light of the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, is "bad diplomacy".

"They will certainly discuss the issue", he said.

Similarly, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are competing for influence in Iraq, another battleground that is important to both the United States and the kingdom because of the close ties between Iraq and Iran.

In August, Saudi Arabia lashed out at Canada after Freeland took to Twitter to call on the regime to immediately release detained human-rights activists.

"Having said that, the way the administration has handled the Saudi Arabia is just not acceptable".

After Donald Trump, it's now US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who has slammed reports that claim Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was involved in the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi that took place last month in Istanbul, reported Reuters.

"This conflict isn't optional for Saudi Arabia, and abandoning it puts American interests at risk too", Pompeo said in prepared remarks for the all-senators briefing.

All of the letters cite recent reports that Washington lobbyists have "raked in $76.9 million", over the past decade to advocate for the Saudis "on everything from nuclear power to fending off legislation that would leave the kingdom liable in lawsuits filed by family members of victims in the September 11 terrorist attacks".

The Crown Prince was received at the airport by Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie.
