UK Parliament Speaker: 'Arguable Case' Govt May Have Broken Rules Over Brexit

May is facing an uphill struggle to get lawmakers to back her deal

It came after Theresa May had told Tory MPs to "hold their nerve" and back her Brexit deal, insisting she would still have a job in two weeks' time as she faces a crunch December 11 Commons vote on her EU Withdrawal Agreement. The big season finale of the Game of Votes.

British government minister Sam Gyimah quit late Friday over Prime Minister Theresa May's "naive" Brexit plan, dealing her another blow in her fight to pass it through parliament. "They are essentially either we leave with no deal which would have serious economic consequences, or we say to the British public: 'I'm sorry you got it wrong, you're going to have to do it again, ' which I think would have serious democratic consequences". "I know it is challenging", he told the BBC on Sunday.

The government's chief legal officer said MPs must decide "whether or not an attorney general, seeking to protect the public interest" was in contempt.

The prime minister, who'll speak to Parliament on Monday about her trip to the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires, refused to tell reporters traveling with her in Argentina whether she has a Plan B. In a statement on Monday, Home Secretary Sajid Javid called on MPs to back the plan, which he said ends free movement and gives the United Kingdom control of its borders. She and European Union leaders say rejecting the divorce terms, which were endorsed by the European Union last weekend, would leave the United Kingdom facing a messy, economically damaging "no-deal" Brexit on March 29.

Opposition parties in the Commons - including Theresa May's DUP allies - said the document and a statement by Mr Cox failed to meet the terms of the vote and asked Speaker John Bercow to launch contempt of Parliament proceedings.

During an unprecedented statement to the Commons, Brexiteers and pro-EU MPs also seized on an admission by the Attorney General that May's compromise Brexit plan for Northern Ireland could apply "indefinitely".

All indications are that the bill will be defeated, something that could be made more likely Monday if Labour is successful in forcing May to reveal the full legal advice she sought before agreeing the deal with European leaders last month.

Javid also said details of Britain's post-Brexit immigration system would not be published before the vote but he said it would bring net migration down to a sustainable level. Under May's deal, Britain has "surrendered our voice, our vote and our veto".

Other Cabinet ministers included Chancellor Philip Hammond, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Home Secretary Sajid Javid have been drafted in the frantic push to try to win over MPs before the vote.

"I'm focusing on. getting that vote and getting the vote over the line", she said.

"Does the deal deliver 100 percent of what I wanted? No".

May will say that Brexit "sets us on course for a better future" and that the vote to leave was a vote to "create a new role for our country in the world".

She will say that she had meetings with leaders keen to strike trade deals, including the hosts Argentina, Australia, Chile and Japan.
