Ally presses Trump to reopen government

Donald Trump

The president issued a series of tweets Saturday in an effort to defend his stance and goad Democrats to return to Washington and end what he called "the massive humanitarian crisis at our Southern Border". Functions not happening include some routine food inspections, timely release of market-moving agriculture data, and USA reviews needed for initial public offerings of stocks.

He was one of 19 law enforcers, faith leaders and elected officials invited to a White House meeting Friday to discuss border security with President Donald Trump, who took the opportunity to attack Democratic refusal to fund a wall. Many Republicans are wary, too, fearing its use by a future Democratic president.

"At some point, this kind of behaviour will switch economic psychology and cause an economic slowdown so I hope these guys get it together shortly".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of NY have refused to meet that demand, instead offering a far smaller sum to shore up border security and asking the President to reopen the government now and negotiate on border security later. He said the president had accepted a border security package that included money for a wall, then changed his mind.

Democrats countered that it was critical for Mueller to be allowed to complete his probe into whether Trump or his campaign worked on behalf of Russian interests. Lindsey Graham grew increasingly frustrated with Democrats this week, after leadership refused to compromise on border wall funding.

"Democrats could solve the Shutdown in 15 minutes!" he said in one tweet, adding in another, "We will be out for a long time unless the Democrats come back from their "vacations" and get back to work".

A Washington Post/ABC poll on Sunday showed 53 percent of respondents put Trump and Congressional Republicans at fault for the extended government closure, while 29 percent blame Democrats.

"You get people ... saying walls are immoral", Trump said, after ticking off a litany of crimes committed both by and against immigrants. "But we need money for that barrier", Trump said. "We believe the government should be opened".

In spite of Trump's claims to the contrary, it would appear that the President has no real plan beyond simply waiting for someone else to save him from himself.

Senator Ron Johnson, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, told CNN that he would "hate" to see Trump invoke emergency powers for a wall.

"It's not keeping people out ... it's to bring people to the global ports of entry so undocumented people become documented and it's to thwart the cartels and their ability to be uninterrupted, bringing narcotics that kill our people".

What's new today The shutdown officially is the longest in United States history, eclipsing a 21-day closure that ended January 6, 1996, during President Bill Clinton's administration.

In Miami, an entire airport terminal will be closed this weekend because of a shortage of security workers.

Trump said a week ago he would "consider DACA" as part of the negotiations, though he would prefer to wait for the Supreme Court ruling.

They are classed as essential employees and required to work, but many are calling in sick to protest the situation. Thirteen percent said both equally are at fault.

But federal employees - those on furlough and those who have remained on the job - still won't be paid until the shutdown ends. "If enough Dems don't vote, it will be a Democrat Shutdown!"
