Election official says Bangladesh's ruling alliance won vote

Before the parliamentary elections: Bangladesh the mobile Internet throttling

The alliance dominated by her Awami League, seen as close to regional power India, won 287 of the 298 seats for which results have been declared, the commission said.

Out of the 293 results announced, Hasin's Awami League got 259 seats and its ally Jatya Party secured 22 seats in the national parliament while the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won only 6 seats.

In a wide-ranging discussion with foreign journalists and election observers at her official residence in Dhaka on Monday, Hasina refused a suggestion that she offer her political foes an olive branch.

The Associated Press received more than 50 calls from people across the country who identified themselves as opposition supporters complaining of threats and being forced to vote in front of ruling party men inside polling booths.

"We've had bad elections in the past but I must say that it is unprecedented how bad this particular election was", 82-year-old Hossain told Reuters late on Sunday.

"The minimum requirements of free and fair election are absent", he said. Alamgir is a fierce critic of Hasina and spearheaded the formation of the opposition alliance with Hossain at the helm.

After voting in Dhaka, she told reporters people favoured her party to "continue the pace of development".

"Overall, there were long lines at polling stations and voting was peaceful. It's just that the Chinese have been very proactive about investments", Wazed said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina over telephone and congratulated her on being reelected in the country's general elections.

Among the Awami League winners was Mashrafe Mortaza, the captain of Bangladesh's one-day cricket team.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling party took a big lead over the opposition in a national election on Sunday, early results and trends showed, in a poll that was marred by allegations of vote rigging and violence that killed 17 people. "We will probe if any come", he said. Human Rights Watch and other worldwide groups had decried repressive measures which they said had created a climate of fear.

Hasina's government has denied the accusations and her party says many of its own workers were hurt in attacks by the opposition.

Police spokesman Sohel Rana said seven victims were workers of the ruling party and five from the BNP.

Reuters reporters across Bangladesh witnessed sparse attendance at polling booths and some voters alleged ruling party workers had blocked them from entering booths, saying their ballots had already been cast.

The opposition said the unrest was stirred up to deter voters, and presiding officers reported a low turnout across the country.

Clashes in the Muslim-majority country broke out between workers of the Awami League and its opponents, led by the BNP of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. "We urge the Election Commission to void this farcical result immediately", the alliance's chief Kamal Hossain said.

The election in a constituency was withheld Sunday following violence in three centers.

Under Hasina, the country's $280 billion economy grew 7.8 percent in the 2017/18 financial year that ended on June 30, compared with 5.1 percent when Hasina took over in 2008/09.

The government, however, does not want to "stay stuck on the garments sector" but diversify into phone and other electronics manufacturing, he said.
