Kamala Harris begins presidential campaign

Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California smiles as she formally launches her presidential campaign at a rally in her hometown of Oakland Calif. Sunday Jan. 27 2019

She invoked the speech that Robert F Kennedy gave in 1968 when he announced that he would challenge President Lyndon B Johnson, noting that Mr Kennedy said "at stake is not simply the leadership of our party and even our country, it is our right to moral leadership of this planet".

According to a recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, 56 percent of survey respondents said they favored a Medicare-for-all plan.

"Medicare-for-all" has emerged as a key issue for the Democratic primary, with many early candidates already backing the health care plan, including Sens.

Early on in her speech, Ms. Harris invoked memories of her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, a biologist who immigrated to the US from Chennai.

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris waves to supporters during her presidential campaign launch rally in Frank H. Ogawa Plaza in Oakland, California, on January 27.

Ms. Harris is running on a platform that includes promises to deliver the "largest working and middle-class tax cut in a generation", Medicare for All, declaring education a fundamental right, and criminal justice reform. "I was born knowing what they are".

"The biggest question for her campaign is whether she can be the front runner she now is and run the insurgent-style campaign that is best suited to her", tweeted former Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer. She pointed to the 2012 shooting rampage at a CT school that left 26 people - mostly children - dead and said members of Congress should have been forced into a room to view the autopsy photos and then been asked to "vote your conscience".

"People in power are trying to convince us that the villain in our American story is each other". And enthusiasm behind efforts to curb gun violence found an example in Lucy McBath, who lost her 17-year-old son in a shooting in 2012. One of the biggest challenges for Harris will be standing firm against vicious attacks from her detractors - not least Trump, a man known for seizing upon the weaknesses of opponents he has labelled "Crooked Hillary" and "Crazy Bernie". The state is fourth in line on primary and caucus calendar after Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. By the second day, she was losing her voice, but still posed for photos with anyone who wanted one.

Let her tell it-as she did in front of over 30,000 people in Oakland, California this Sunday, officially launching her 2020 presidential campaign-and California senator Kamala Harris is a proud daughter of Oakland.

Lieu, who is among the most outspoken critics of President Trump, backed his home state senator over a steadily growing field of other Democratic candidates. (Harris was the only potential 2020 presidential candidate who voted against the deal in February 2018 that would have created protections for Dreamers in exchange for wall funding).

Harris has a long history of public service.
