London Heathrow airport: Drone spotted as flights grounded

Gatwick and Heathrow invest in their own anti-drone tech after Christmas chaosq

A spokesperson for London's Metropolitan Police said they were called just after 5pm to "reports of a sighting of a drone in the vicinity of Heathrow Airport".

"Based on standard operating procedures, working with Air Traffic Control and the Met Police, we have resumed departures out of Heathrow following a short suspension".

The west London hub apologised for any disruption caused to passengers after flights were suspended for around an hour on Tuesday.

Passengers are taking to social media to report that they are stuck on the tarmac at Heathrow this evening because of the incident.

Gatwick has since said it has invested in anti-drone technology, while Heathrow said that it would do so.

It comes after last month's disruption at Gatwick Airport after drones were reported.

Emma Gilthorpe, executive director for expansion at Heathrow, said the proposals were crucial in ensuring the airport remained fit for the future.

BBC producer Kathy Long, speaking from a plane waiting to depart at Heathrow, said passengers had not been told officially what was behind the delay.

Ministers are now exploring the use of military grade jammers and blocking systems to bring down rogue drones, such as the Israeli Drone Dome system reported to have been deployed at Gatwick.

British officials used sophisticated military gear to get Gatwick back in operation, and aviation authorities said that equipment could be deployed at other British airports to deter drone intrusions.

Today, the British government announced a package of measures created to give police extra powers to combat drones.

Police will also be allowed to fine users up to 112 euros ($128) for failing to comply when instructed to land a drone, or not showing registration to operate a drone.
