Passenger carries firearm through TSA screening at Atlanta onto Delta flight

Miami International Airport closed one of its concourses for half the day on Jan 12 2019

It was taking more than an hour for passengers to get through domestic checkpoints at the world's busiest airport in Atlanta on Monday, the first business day after security screeners missed paychecks for the first time due to partial government shutdown.

The absence rate at TSA on Monday is 7.6 percent, up from 3.2 percent on the same day past year, according to TSA spokesperson Michael Bilello.

More than twice as many TSA agents called out sick on Monday compared to a year ago, according to the TSA.

The Transportation Security Administration acknowledged in a statement that security procedures were not followed at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on January 2.

But the impact of those absences on fliers and airport security has been hotly debated.

Travellers wait near a closed down terminal at the Miami International Airport.

TSA agents, who police security checkpoints at every passenger airport in the USA, are required to work during the shutdown but are not being paid for their work. Despite some reports that service disruption at Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. was caused by TSA workers calling out sick, a spokesperson said that the delays were caused by another unforeseen event - the weather.

Chicago airports continued to see normal operations Monday, with wait times of less than 15 minutes, said aviation department spokeswoman Karen Pride.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been struggling to pay for basic necessities as the shutdown has reached its 24th day, making it the longest government shutdown in US history, thanks to President Donald Trump's refusal to sign any appropriations bill that doesn't include $5.7 billion for a southwestern border wall.

At least 800,000 federal employees around the country have been affected by the shutdown, missing their first paycheck on January 11.

The message adds that security standards "remain uncompromised" at the nation's airports.

Under guidelines from the federal Office of Personnel Management, paid time off is canceled for employees, including the airport screeners, who are exempt from certain federal labor laws.

"Our airline partners, restaurant partners and members of the community are really reaching out to say, 'Thank you, '" Handy said.

"We have to appreciate that they're here", one passenger said.

Other airports are looking at ways to support employees, like bringing in utility companies to give workers more flexibility on paying their bills or a credit union that could help provide loans.

Baker worked through the last prolonged shutdown in 2013, but explained why this one is more hard for his family.
