Pelosi, Schumer respond to Trump speech on border security

President Trump speaks to reporters after meeting with members of Congress at the White House in Washington

That's what we got today on the Donald Trump parallel reality prime time show from the Oval Office as the USA president exploited his powerful office to reel off a litany of scare stories about illegal immigration and a non-existent "humanitarian crisis" at the USA border while 800,000 federal government workers are working without pay since 22 December previous year because of the ongoing shutdown over Trump's tantrum over getting his $5.7 billion for a border wall.

"There is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border", Trump said in a rare live Oval Office address to the nation, adding that every day US Customs and Border Patrol agents "encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country".

The President had an ally in Senator for Georgia David Perdue who tweeted that Mr Trump "showed leadership" by speaking directly to the American people.

The partial government shutdown reached its 18th day, making the closure the second-longest in history. His insistence on it now appears to be an attempt to galvanize his base after Republican losses in the fall midterm elections and ahead of the President's own re-election campaign next year. The Wall Street Journal and other outlets suggested that there would be no such declaration on Tuesday.

Trump claimed there is a "security" crisis on the border.

Mr Trump said an as-yet-unratified revamp of the North American Free Trade Agreement would pay for the wall, a claim previously disputed by economists.

The partial shutdown started on December 22 when funding for many federal agencies expired and the US president refused to sign any spending measure from the Congress that did not include United States dollars 5 billion for his US-Mexico border wall.

But Mr Trump's nine-minute address is unlikely to be remembered by the nation in quite the same way.

In 2006, senators Chuck Schumer, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden voted in favour of 700 miles (1,120km) of fencing on the almost 2,000-mile border under the Secure Fence Act.

"How much more American blood will be shed before Congress does its job?" he asked. Mr Trump invited leading lawmakers from both parties to the White House for talks.

On Thursday he heads to the south-western border. "This is about whether we fulfil our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve", Trump said.

Mrs Pelosi said: "The fact is: the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge". Until now, Democrats have refused to budge on the border wall, which has blocked the formation of a new budget and put government services on hold. "We need a solution now", Mr Perdue said.

In a joint rebuttal speech, Schumer and Pelosi described the wall as unnecessary and accused Trump of appealing to fear rather than facts. "Division, not unity", the NY senator added.

The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a thirty-foot wall. Government figures do not suggest anything close to a crisis-level influx of unauthorized immigrants; the number of people apprehended crossing the Mexican border, which USA officials use as a proxy measure for how many people are trying to cross in total, is a quarter what it was two decades ago.

The major television networks and some cable television news stations will air President Donald Trump's speech to the nation live on January 8. The first was the American public, which polls indicate are generally uninterested in his border wall proposal and view the president as responsible for the government shutdown. While demanding that Democrats pony up the $5.7 billion he says he needs to get going on the wall, he has also insisted that the wall will pay for itself and that Mexico is paying for the wall.
