Pound at one-week high as Brexit vote nears

Brexit vote will 'definitely' happen, UK's May says, as new poll shows most Britons would now vote to remain

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will hold more talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May this week, but has ruled out that the Brexit deal agreed on in November could be renegotiated to gain support in the British parliament.

Many Conservative MPs continue to believe the deal does not represent the Brexit the country voted for, and some are actively calling for Britain to leave with no deal.

The result of the vote - a defeat by seven with 20 Tory MPs rebelling, including former cabinet ministers Sir Michael Fallon and Justine Greening - is one thing, and a bad introduction to the resumption of the "meaningful vote" debate.

Ahead of the division, ministers sought to play down the significance of the amendment, insisting it made only the "most minor and technical changes" to the legislation. "That is why we are taking every opportunity possible in parliament to prevent no deal", Corbyn said, cited by the Guardian.

In a two-way choice, 64 percent of grassroots members would opt for a "no-deal" Brexit on 29 March, with just 29 percent preferring the plan Theresa May has negotiated.

Some Brexit supporters say a no-deal exit is the only way to truly leave the bloc and that warnings of the economic consequences have been overblown to drum up support for May's plan.

As things stand May does not appear to have the numbers to win the support of enough lawmakers for the Brexit deal that she forged with the European Union last November.

Meanwhile MPs narrowly passed an amendment yesterday that seeks to stop the government enacting a no-deal Brexit by hampering it from taking financial measures to mitigate any economic headwinds caused by leaving the European Union without a deal - the alternative ministers have claimed will happen if parliament rejects May's deal. Indeed, our data suggests that, far from the Christmas break having softened parliamentary...

Boris Johnson, who helped lead the Brexit campaign, said that voters would not be scared into backing a poor deal.

James's words appeared to represent the starkest threat yet to Tory MPs that if they fail to back the PM then they risk losing Brexit itself.

But in a BBC interview, U.K. Brexit minister Stephen Barclay dismissed the possibility and said that he had not spoken to the EU.

The Commons will begin five days of debate on Wednesday, culminating in the "meaningful vote" next week which could determine the fate of her Government.

MANSTON, ENGLAND-Britain began rehearsals on January 7, for the upheaval of a no-deal Brexit by lining up 87 trucks at a little-used airport for a trip towards the United Kingdom's most important trading gateway to continental Europe.

The UK is poised to leave the EU on March 29, two years after it triggered Article 50, the exit clause in the EU's constitution, and kick-started arduous negotiations with European leaders over a divorce deal.

Cabinet Office minister David Lidington, seen as Mrs May's effective deputy, this morning issued another frantic plea for critics to get behind her plan.

"Everyone recognizes that Brexit is an existential threat to the United Kingdom automotive industry and we hope a practical solution will prevail", he said, calling for lawmakers to back May's deal to guarantee a transition period. Anything will need legislation.

How exactly they stop it is another question - no deal is still the default option.

The EU, for its part, has insisted that the withdrawal agreement can not be renegotiated but has made clear the backstop is meant only as a temporary measure of last resort.
