Pro-Israel Democrat Kamala Harris announces 2020 presidential bid

Sen. Kamala Harris listens during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on homeland security on Jan. 16 2018

The California Democrat tells ABC's "Good Morning America" that she's entering the increasingly crowded field of candidates seeking the Democratic nomination. Elizabeth Warren, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro have moved forward with plans to seek the party's nomination.

"The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values", she continues, the word "FIGHT" highlighted on the screen.

She served two terms as district attorney of San Francisco (2004-2011), before being elected as attorney general of California (2011-2017), the first woman of colour to do so.

"Run Kamala Run!" Westmount High School's social-media feeds gushed after Harris confirmed what much of the rest of the US had assumed: she plans on being the Democrat who pries President Donald Trump out of the White House in 2020.

She signs off by inviting supporters to join her in Oakland, CA on Sunday Jan. 27 for her big campaign kick-off event and asking folks to check out her website, KamalaHarris.org, to join her campaign.

The kickoff state of Iowa, which launched Barack Obama's presidential bid in 2008, has a strong base of liberal activists, and the race will then quickly move to more diverse states such as Nevada and SC.

Harris launches her campaign fresh off of a tour to promote her latest memoir, "The Truths We Hold", which was widely seen as a stage-setter for a presidential bid. But our strength is that we fight to reach those ideals [.] So today, the day we celebrate Dr. King, is a very special day for all of us as Americans and I'm honored to be able to make my announcement on the day we commemorate him. That is, if she manages to avoid imploding on the campaign trail, or if people avoid getting epileptic fits watching her campaign videos. Vowing to "bring our voices together", Harris would be the first woman to hold the presidency and the second African-American if she succeeds. "Having said that, being best on paper is often not worth the cost of the paper".

She is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India and has pushed back against critics of "identity politics".

Harris has done little to hide her presidential ambitions. Since then, she has worked to establish a national profile - by aggressively questioning President Trump's judicial nominees, writing a book and stumping for Democrats in last year's midterm elections.

But Harris made no apologies about her career, stating that "there is a lot about what I did as a prosecutor that I'm proud of", including starting a first-in-the-nation program that offered first-time nonviolent offenders a chance to have their charges dismissed if they completed vocational training. Eric Swalwell and former attorney general Eric Holder.

When she became attorney general, she came under fire for her decision to defend the death penalty - out of what she described as a sense of duty to the office - even though she personally opposed it. "I might not call her a hypocrite".

The photo was posted on Twitter by Lily Adams, Harris' communications director. Multiple pundits are saying Harris comes out looking stronger than any other potential candidate based on her broad appeal across the handful of constituencies that will decide fortunes in the primaries that will begin next Spring.
